6 | DECEMBER 2018 DECEMBER 2018 | 7 Welcome to the 72nd Annual SCC Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase! Thank you so much for being part of this event. Your participation has helped accomplish our shared mission of advancing science in the cosmetic industry and furthering the interests of cosmetic scientists everywhere. This year we have put together a top-notch program that promises to be educational, inspiring and helpful in advancing your cosmetic industry career. And in response to feedback from previous years, we’ve moved venues to a more spacious location which will provide you with better opportunities to connect with other cosmetic chemists. Many thanks to Erica O’Grady, Latasha Archer, Colleen Daddino, Sam Neely, and Kenisha Beaupierre, our excellent National SCC staff, who have helped organize and publicize this unique event. Thanks also goes to the volunteer members of the COSA committee who were responsible for reviewing the hundreds of submitted papers and abstracts and narrowing them down to this impressive presentation lineup. Additionally, we would like to thank our sponsors who have helped make this event better. Be sure to stop by the Technology Showcase to discover the latest in industry technology. This event is all about cosmetic science and, to that end, over the next two days you’ll be able to hear talks from more than 40 leading experts in the subjects of formulation, dermatology, ingredients, cosmetic regulations and more. We have multiple educational tracks to appeal to members of a wide range of experience from beginners to advanced formulators. We’ve also scheduled a few continuing education courses for more in-depth education. And to encourage the next generation of cosmetic scientists, we included a student poster session highlighting cosmetic science related work being done at the university level. I hope that you find this conference to be a valuable addition to cosmetic science education. Thank you. It has been an honor to serve as President of the SCC this year and I look forward to helping the organization grow in the future. Have a great time in New York! Sincerely, PERRY ROMANOWSKI President Society of Cosmetic Chemists Welcome to the 72nd Annual SCC Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase. The Society is approaching a milestone of 75 years as the leading organization for the promotion of cosmetic science and education. The Society was first imagined by Maison G. de Navarre in 1935. When he began a business consulting in the cosmetics industry he approached many of his clients to gain support for the development of the SCC. On May 23, 1945 the founding members met at the Lexington Hotel in New York City to adopt a constitution and participate in the first technical program. The Society continues this legacy by delivering advanced scientific information through the annual meeting. Dr. Charles Spence of Oxford University will deliver the Frontiers of Science Lecture about neuroscience-inspired multisensory design in cosmetics and the Henry Maso Award lecturer, Dr. Michael McAlpine from the University of Minnesota, will discuss 3-D printing of electronics on the skin. Continuing education courses presented in conjunction with the annual meeting focus on relevant trends like natural ingredients and understanding what the implications of genetically modified organisms on our industry. Our NEXTGEN initiative to educate students and those early in their careers continues with a specialized track of presentations. I would like to thank the Committee on Scientific Affairs, lead by chair Akshay Talati, for their efforts in preparing the program. And thank you to our sponsors and companies who support the membership of their employees. I also want to extend a big thank you to our national office staff. Erica O’Grady, Latasha Archer, Kenisha Beaupierre, Colleen Daddino, and Sam Neely put forth tremendous efforts in preparation for the annual meeting. Under normal circumstances, the annual meeting already takes a monumental amount of work. This year the staff had the additional challenge of transitioning to a new office location just a few months prior to the meeting. I hope that you enjoy the meeting and return to work inspired. I am honored to continue serving this organization and you, our members, during my presidency in 2019. Sincerely, KELLY A.
