DECEMBER 2018 | 13 FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE AWARD LECTURER Charles Spence, Ph.D. Professor Charles Spence is a world-famous experimental psychologist with a specialization in neuroscience-inspired multisensory design. He has worked with many of the world’s largest companies across the globe since establishing the Crossmodal Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Department of Experimental Psychology, Oxford University in 1997. Prof. Spence has published over 850 articles and edited or authored, 10 academic volumes including, in 2014, the Prose prize-winning “The perfect meal”, and the recent bestseller “Gastrophysics: The new science of eating” (2017 Penguin Viking). Much of Prof. Spence’s work focuses on the design of enhanced multisensory food and drink experiences, through collaborations with chefs, baristas, mixologists, perfumiers, and the food and beverage, and flavor and fragrance industries. Prof. Spence has also worked extensively on the question of how technology will transform our dining experiences in the future. HENRY MASO AWARD LECTURER Michael McAlpine, Ph.D. Michael C. McAlpine is the Benjamin Mayhugh Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota (2015-Present). Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University (2008-2015). He received a B.S. in Chemistry with honors from Brown University (2000), and an M.A. (2002) and Ph.D. (2006) in Chemistry from Harvard University. His current research is focused on 3D printing functional materials & devices. He has received a number of awards, including the George W. Taylor Award for Distinguished Research, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), National Academy of Science (NAS) Kavli Frontiers Fellow, Extreme Mechanics Letters (EML) Young Investigator Award, SPIE Nanoengineering Pioneer Award, NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, Graduate Mentoring Award in Engineering, DARPA Young Faculty Award, National Academy of Engineering (NAE) - Frontiers of Engineering, Technology Review TR35 Young Innovator Under 35, DuPont Young Investigator Award, American Asthma Foundation Early Excellence Award, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Award, and the Intelligence Community (IC) Young Investigator Award. LEADERSHIP KEYNOTE ADDRESS Brian Riggs Brian Riggs is currently the lead strategist for his company, the Dialogue Shop, a boutique leadership and strategy firm that helps individuals, teams and organizations design and execute their desired future. His clients range from medical societies and associations to international banks and large construction firms. Brian completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina, his Master’s degree at Rutgers University, and the Change Leadership program at Cornell University. He began his career as an historian at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and has always been captivated by social movements overt time. He is a native of Southern New Jersey where he currently resides with his wife and two daughters.
