74 BOOK REVIEWS ORGANIC CHEMISTRY SIMPLIFIED. R. Macy. Pp. X q- 486 q- I11. (1970). Chemical Publishing Co., New York. $15.00. There must be many members of the Society who have not opened a textbook of elementary organic chemistry for many years it must be nearly 50 years since I personally had occasion to do so. It might well be asked how such a work could be of interest or use to this type of public--a question I asked myself on opening the present volume. The answer is, I think, in the unusual approach to the subject adopted by the present author so that in many respects this becomes a narrative rather than a collection of formulae and equations. In addition emphasis is on the role of the electron, an aspect of the subject on which my generation is probably rather weak. The book is divided into four parts dealing respectively with the unique position of the carbon atom, the architecture and classifica- tion of carbon compounds and special topics in organic chemistry (e.g., plant and animal life, dyes, giant molecules and isotypes). A short but cryptic introductory paragraph exhorts the reader to take special note of the paragraph in italics on p. 000! The style is simple and direct, the illustrations are adequate in number and presentation, and the references to industrial applications are apt though few--and do not include cosmetics. The book may be recommended to those who wish to brush up and update their organic chemistry the easy way. Apart from that it is a student's book, and a faiJly successful one at that, apparently, since it has reached a third edition in 27 years. JULIUS GRANT
JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS 75 International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists IFSCC Award Committee The duties and responsibilities of the Award Committee are to adjudicate for the IFSCC Prize of 4 000 Swiss francs for the best original scientific paper to be presented at IFSCC Congresses. The next IFSCC Award will be given at the VIIth Congress which is being held in Hamburg from 11 to 15 September 1972. The Council of the IFSCC, at its meeting on 22 October 1971, in Paris, ratified the method of adjudicating for the Prize, as follows: 1. The closing date for the acceptance of papers will be 5 calendar months before the start of the Congress. Authors will be asked to provide, if at all possible, 10 copies of their papers (plus abstract)--this, however, will not be mandatory. In the event that there is a surplus of papers and the organizing Society require assistance in selection of, say, 30 from 40, they will send such papers to all members of the Award Committee not later than 4 months before the start of the Congress, indicating their own preference. The Chairman of the Award Committee will then inform the organizing Society of his com- mittee's preference not later than 3 months before the start of the Congress. 2. If there are more papers of high quality than can be fitted into the planned congress programme, it shall become the option of the organizing Society to make alternative arrangements to include the surplus papers in the Congress proceedings. 3. In any event the organizing Society in collaboration with the chairman of the Award Committee will agree on the final selection of papers 3 months before the start of the Congress. The final decision will, however, rest with the organizing Society. Authors of papers both accepted and rejected should be informed accordingly at this time. 4. The Award Committee members shall all meet for one full day immediately preceding the Congress. They shall attempt to choose the 10 most outstanding papers. They will write short judgements on these 10 and also ensure that as many members of the Committee as possible hear these papers personally. 5. The Award Committee will meet at the conclusion of the scientific programme of the congress to make its decision for the Award. The President of the IFSCC, if he is not the Chairman of the Award Committee, shall be present at this meeting. The Chairman of the Award Committee adjudicating for the next presenta- tion in Hamburg is: PROF. DR I. BONADEO Via Cornalia 32, 20184 Milano, Italy.
