WELCOME OF DR. WALTER A. TAYLOR, PRESIDENT, SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS, MEETING OF MAY 19, 1948 Members of the Society of Cos- metic Chemists, Ladies and Gentlemen: It is a pleasure to welcome you to the semi-annual meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. This professional society was truly born of need just three years ago. We have long since passed the period of original organization and have accomplished the initial program of objectives. As with any learned profession, the boundaries of its knowledge and activities cannot be limited to any one region, therefore, when we find ourselves expanding so rapidly we realize that local chapters will soon be needed in geographical locations where members are unable to fre- quently attend our annual and semi- annual meetings. The Society offi- cers are now completing details for the formation of a British Chapter in London. With the rapid growth of the Society it has been decided that the activities at the board meetings should be reported more frequently to the individual members. To meet this need the President of the Society will prepare a memorandum in the form of a news letter and send a copy to each member from time to time. Members are urged to as- sist in this activity by furnishing news items announcing professional positions open or desired and by contributing suggestions for the advancement of the Society. As a service to the technical people of the cosmetic industry we felt it necessary to form a central library of books, periodicals, and general information relating to cos- metics and perfumery. It is a pleasure to advise you that even at this early date this committee of three appointed for three years has made great progress toward its goal. It has been necessary since our last December meeting to call two board meetings in order to conclude details of this meeting, and discuss plans necessitated by the growth and development of the Society. Every suggestion arising either from whithin the board or from the members at large receives careful consideration. I want you to know that you have an active, vigorous, and enthusiastic group of officers and committeemen who unselfishly give freely of their own time for the welfare of the Society. 141
INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS, The British Section THE INAUGURAL MEETING of the British Section of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists was held on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1948, at 2:30 p. m., in the Meeting Hall of United Trade Press Ltd., 42-43, Gerrard Street, London, W.1. The Chair- man, F. V. Wells, opened the pro- ceedings by reading several letters from interested parties unable to attend the meeting. These greet- ings conveyed the good wishes of W. A. Poucher William Westwood, B.Sc., A.R.I.C., who was unable to travel from Glasgow Dennis Du- veen, F.R.I.C., who had flown to America on the previous day S. Crystal, one of the first British members of the Society Dr. J. H. Seager, who on the day of the meet- ing was in France and Ronald Demuth, who was unfortunately in a hospital. A cablegram from "Ed" aleNavarre, one of the founders of the Society, conveyed to the Section his best wishes for its success and expansion. TI•E CI•A•RMAN'S SeEEcI• "The gathering here today," Mr. Wells continued, "consists of mem- bers of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, including its President, Dr. Walter Taylor potential mem- bers of the Society and various other interested parties. It was never intended to be a comprehen- sive congregation of all those inter- ested in the Society in this country, but rather as a representative cross section of British cosmetic chemists. In that respect you will doubtless consider that it admirably fulfills its purpose. "The primary object of the meet- ing is to announce the formation of the British Section of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. In addition, it is desired to give some sort of out- line of the origin and development of the Society--to indicate its con- stitution, aims, and achievements-- and to enlarge its membership in this country, among those who are duly qualified to belong to it. "There are more than 200 mem- bers of the Society in the U.S.A. They include Dr. Walter Taylor, the President, whom we have the honor of welcoming here today also men of the caliber of Dr. Mars- ton T. Bogerr, Dr. Dan Dahle (for- merly F.D.A. Cosmetic Chief), Dr. Arthur Cade, M. G. deNavarre, Dr. Ernest Guenther, Lester Hoyt, Dr. John Killian, Dr. Emil Klarmann, Herbert Kranich, Marcel Surer, Dr. Everett McDonough, Raymond Reed, Edward Sagatin, Dr. Louis Schwarz, and Dr. Henry J. Wing. 142
