9 During 2018, the Michigan Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists hosted three unique chapter meetings as well as a full day educational symposium with social event. We had an amazing year with our highest number of members to date. We were also very proud to have a full roster of volunteers and multiple individuals run for officer positions for 2019. This year we were blessed with more speakers willing to present at our meetings than we had the time for. We had a wonderful year learning about all the different aspects of the cosmetics and personal care industry. In March, we had recognized National Women’s Day with our Women Who Soar in Science event. We had a great time learning about the cosmetic industry from the differing perspectives of running a small cosmetics business to the fundamental research involved. At our May meeting we had the opportunity to take a break from skin science and dive into personal care industry with our event Enough skin: It’s time for Hair and Nails. In September we focused on the natural side of the business with our Naturals Symposium. The night before we hosted a social event at New Holland Brewing’s – The Knickerbocker. The symposium topics covered all aspects of the natural cosmetic industry from current regulations and claims to trends, and from formulation to responsible sourcing. During the event we also held a student poster session and contest for best poster. We had several students from University of Toledo present at the event. We want to say congratulations again to Mariam Abou Dahech, Kendra Kutcher and Casey Dunigan on your first, second and third place awards. We also want to thank all the students who presented and helped make our event so informative! At our November meeting we enjoyed learning about the different sustainable initiatives at work to protect our plant. The There’s No Planet B: Significance of Sustainable Beauty event looked at the developments in packaging and formulation as well as major corporations’ efforts to make an impact. We conducted our 2019 officer installation and continued our Toys for Tots campaign. The Best Speaker Award from the Michigan Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists for 2018 went to Shannon Hess, Associate Director of Responsible Sourcing from Burt’s Bees. Shannon presented at our September Symposium. Her presentation was titled “Responsible Sourcing in Natural Cosmetics.” The Michigan Chapter wants to say thank you to Shannon and congratulations! We were very proud to continue our support of the National SCC in 2018 by sponsoring the pen giveaway at the SCC Annual Meeting in New York City. We hope you put yours to good use! This year we also reached the new membership retention goal of 85% (we reached 88% retention) which earned us a $1,000 bonus. We are entering 2019 with goals to continue improving the professionalism and education in our industry, promote and set high standards for research, strengthen our own education through the sharing of science, grow our professional network, provide the public confidence in the science behind consumer products, and ultimately advance cosmetic science! From all of us in the Michigan Chapter, best wishes for a wonderful New Year! Michigan
