13 The highlight of October for the LISCC was the CEP course (held virtually), Introduction to Polymer Science and Its Applications in the Cosmetics Industry with Michael Fevola, PhD. This informative, two-part course was held on Tuesday 10/19/2021 and Wednesday 10/20/2021. The LISCC’s November Meeting was the final virtual event for the Chapter. Officers for the 2022 board were installed and Alison Griffin spoke on Decoding the Crystal Ball: Color Trends Where they Come From and How They Translate for Cosmetics, Fashion and Home Décor. This insightful talk was a fantastic close to another successful year for the Long Island Chapter! Michigan 2021 has been another challenging year for our Michigan Chapter due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of the year, we thought the pandemic would end towards summer and we planned to have our September and November meetings in person. Little did we know that more COVID variants would arise such as Delta and Omicron, making in person meetings almost impossible. Luckily, more and more members were vaccinated by the second half of the year and received boosters as well, which allowed us to hold our final November meeting in person. In 2021, the Michigan Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists continued with virtual chapter meetings. We started the year off strong with our first meeting in January. Catherine Johns, author of “Show Up & Shine: Simple Steps to Boost Your Confidence & Charisma” gave a great presentation entitled “How to Connect with People You Can’t See, Command a Room that Doesn’t Exist, and Make a Genuine Impact in Your Virtual Meetings.” The presentation was a hit and we had over 70 people attending virtually. Dr. Yulia Park was presented the 2020 SCCMI Chapter Merit Award for her roles within the Michigan Chapter. Yulia is a founding member of the SCC Michigan Chapter that was incorporated in 2013. She has worked tirelessly since then as a volunteer for various chapter offices including Chair in 2014. Yulia is also active in the SCC at the national level. She was elected to be Area II Director and has served as Secretary for the national organization. Yulia is a Manager of Healthy Beauty & Home and Nutrition Business Continuance within Regulatory Affairs department at Amway. Congratulations Yulia!
14 For our meeting in March (held via Zoom), Dr. Anna Langerveld from Genemarkers gave a presentation about the potential for cannabidiol (CBD) to affect skin functions such as protection and repair. CBD has become a very popular ingredient for topical formulations and is associated with claims such as anti-inflammation, protection against oxidation, wound-healing, and anti- aging. This talk covered unpublished research done at Genemarkers to study the effect of CBD on gene expression using in vitro skin cultures. Our virtual Chapter meetings in May and July were a success. In May we had Dr. Pascal Yvon from Alban Muller/Croda present on Natural Clean Beauty and his presentation “Navigating buzzwords to address demand for naturality” was a hit. In July we had Phillip Ludwig from BASF speak on Sustainability. His presentation was entitled “A Sustainable Rambutan Program: Finding Benefits from Multiple Parts of a Fruit Tree to Foster a Better Local Social Impact.” Phillip’s presentation was also a hit as sustainability continues to be a hot topic in our industry. We held our final November chapter meeting in person at Bistro Bella Vita in downtown Grand Rapids. Our speaker was retired Amway scientist Kausar Malik. Her presentation, “COVID-19 Lessons Learned”, discussed the negative and positive impact of COVID Pandemic on the businesses and the lessons learned from this experience that could provide benefits both in day-to-day circumstances and future emergencies. We thank all of our speakers for their very interesting and educational topics. While we missed seeing everyone in person for most of the year, with virtual meetings being the norm, the last meeting in November was a refreshing change back to almost normal. During our November meeting we held our officer installation with four new officers installed. Please welcome our 2022 SCCMI Board: Chair - Rong Kong Chair Elect Sam Costanzo Secretary Yulia Park Treasurer Tori Guglielmi
