8 Carolina Like all the chapters, the Carolina Chapter continued to face unprecedented challenges in 2021 and our board worked closely together to overcome these challenges. It wasn’t the return to normal that we hoped, but we were able to provide quality education content to keep our members engaged. For the 1st part of 2021, we continued to team up with other area chapters to offer webinars as part of the Area IV Tech talk series. This included a talk in April called “Taking Safe Synthetics to the Next Level: What comes after Vitamins C & E?” which was presented by Tom Meyer, PhD, who an industry expert in chemistry and sun/skin interactions. In May, the Carolina Chapter hosted a tech talk webinar: “New Perspectives on Aging Skin” presented by Dr. Howard Epstein, an industry expert with multiple publications and patents and a regular SCC contributor. By summer, we were planning to go back to meeting in person and scheduled a social event at Tobacco Road in Durham which overlooks the Durham Bulls stadium. However, with the emergence of the Omicron variant, we were forced to make the difficult decision to cancel this event due to low attendance. We were finally able to host an in-person meeting in November. We went to the Firestone Country Club in Charlotte, NC for our officer installation and technical talk: “Sensory Science 101” presented by Amanda Nobbe of Burt’s Bees. This meeting was well attended, and we received great feedback from members who were excited to be together in person after a long pause. As we start 2022, the chapter remains in good shape. Membership is steady and our new leaders elected are longtime SCC members as well experienced board members. The Carolina Chapter looks forward to the new year, and the outgoing and incoming chapter boards have already started work to get ready for upcoming chapter events, including the Naturally Kiawah Symposium, our biggest chapter event which is back on in October 2022. 1: The 2021 was installed via Zoom in late 2020.
