26 Madam CJ Walker Scholarship A’Lelia Bundles, the great-great granddaughter of Madam CJ Walker, along with 2022 SCC President Michelle Hines, PhD (representing scholarship sponsor, Mary Kay) presented each winner with a $5,000 SCC Madam CJ Walker Scholarship award (pictured below from L-R: 2022 President Michelle Hines, PhD Scholarship Winner Imani Elaine Porter A’Lelia Bundles Scholarship Winner Joy Rutherford and 2021 President Liz Streland). Awards 2021 Frontiers of Science Lecture Award, sponsored by NuSkin was presented to Edwin D. Lephart, PhD (Brigham Young University) for his presentation entitled, “Phytoestrogens Controversies and Misinformation versus In Vitro and Clinical Efficacy Evidence”. Edwin Lephart received his PhD in Physiology (Molecular Biology) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSWMC) in Dallas. His postdoctoral training continued at UTSWMC and subsequently was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in Dallas, when he took a position at Brigham Young University as professor of Physiology and Neuroscience. Dr. Lephart has authored over 100 publications in international scientific peer-reviewed journals and has over 8 book chapters covering reproductive biology, neuroscience, phytoestrogen research and served in several editorial board/consulting positions. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the United States Department of Agriculture and 15 US/Worldwide patents. The Frontiers of Science Lecture Award recognizes a speaker who has achieved exceptional national or international stature in the scientific community and for delivering a lecture at the 75th Annual Scientific Meeting.
27 2021 Henry Maso Keynote Lecture Award, sponsored by Siltech Corporation and the Maso Family, was presented to Howard Maibach, MD (University of California, San Francisco) for his presentation entitled, “Historical Review of the Science of Skin”. Dr. Howard Maibach is a dermatologist with expertise in treating contact dermatitis (a rash caused by touching an irritating substance) and occupational dermatitis (a rash resulting from workplace exposure to an irritating substance). His specialties include allergic skin disorders and skin conditions caused by exposure to toxic substances. He also has an interest in dermatopharmacology, the study of medications for skin disorders. Dr. Maibach is the author/editor of 100 books and 3,000 articles-largely on pharmacology, toxicology, and efficacy on skin related products. The Henry Maso Keynote Lecture Award recognizes an outstanding lecturer of the 75th Annual Scientific Meeting, specifically selected by the COSA Committee. 2021 Maison G. de Navarre Medal Award, the Society’s highest honor, was presented to Randall Wickett, PhD (University of Cincinnati). This award recognizes Dr. Wickett’s activity supporting the best interests of the cosmetic industry through technical contributions. Dr. Wickett holds a PhD in Biophysics from Oregon State University and is currently Emeritus Professor of Cosmetic Science in the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy at the University of Cincinnati. Previously, he worked for Procter and Gamble and the SC Johnson Company performing research on skin and hair care products. Dr. Wickett has authored more than 120 scientific articles, holds several patents, and has given more than 100 invited presentations in his 40+ years in the industry. We are honored to present him with this award and look forward to all of his continued contributions to the industry! The 2021 Merit Award was presented to Perry Romanowski (Element 44, Inc). Our policy manual describes the award as recognizing a member of the Society for distinguished contributions, achievements and service to the Society on a National Level. Perry has been an outstanding advocate for the benefits of SCC membership. We are thrilled to honor him with the 2021 Merit Award. During Perry’s 29+ years of membership, he has served the Society as a course instructor, IFSCC Liaison, Chapter President, and National Board President (2018). A tireless champion of the SCC and its mission to advance cosmetic science, he has had a significant impact on our growth and success.
