Javits Convention Center in New York. Ohio Valley After nearly an entire year of webinar meetings in 2020, like many other chapters, we were faced with the tough decision to schedule an in-person meeting or utilize a remote, virtual session. Each meeting was considered individually as the time approached,
21 unfortunately this made it difficult to provide the membership with a schedule for the full year as we have provided in the past. Throughout the year we used the SurveyMonkey platform to get feedback on how our membership felt about in-person events, hosting indoors or outdoors, and interest in a golf event. Overall, we take pride in keeping our membership safe and decided to offer alternatives to our normally in person meetings and found great success in the events that we hosted. Webinar – Dr. Pascal Yvon With 25 years of global experience in the life sciences industries, authored many cosmetic trade journal articles and regularly speaks at leading industry events and conferences we invited Dr. Pascal Yvon to kick off our 2021 technical sessions. The unprecedented situation created by COVID-19 generated a fulgurant acceleration in this consumer interest and request. Today, consumers want full naturality and it’s not just about a product to address a fleeting trend they want a series of attributes that address their long-term 360° lifestyle for wellness and holistic well-being goal. Consumer demand for natural cosmetics has been continuously growing over recent years, with a great focus on truly natural products containing natural ingredients. Plants have been used in beauty and health for centuries around the world ethnobotany revealed that plant properties are linked to their active molecules, a wide variety of secondary metabolites. These phytochemicals express a wide range of activities of high relevance and great interest in cosmetic applications such as antioxidant, anti- inflammatory, and antimicrobial. In addition to the lack of definition from regulatory bodies for “natural”, thus for “Natural beauty”, recent years have seen the emergence of many buzzwords used to describe industry market movements, such as “Clean beauty”, “Green beauty”, and more recently “Conscious beauty”, which are being used with various interpretations. From Dr Yvon’s discussion, he explained that clarification is needed, because this creates a serious confusion in the marketplace and possible consumer misconceptions. Fretboard Brewing Company – Fretboard Brewing Company Staff We were able to schedule our 1st in-person meeting in over a year at Fretboard Brewing Company. The brewers at Fretboard Brewing offered an in-depth discussion behind the science and production of brewing beer. Brewing beer involves biology, chemistry, mechanics, and physics. It is also an art. Great homebrewers are like great chefs. During our brewery tour, we learned that brewing is a multistage process. It starts with the mixing of barley malt and brewing water (so-called mashing) and heating of the slurry. Enzymes in the malt degrade starch and proteins and a mixture of sugars, peptides, and amino acids are formed. The venue was an indoor-outdoor hybrid, giving us the option to stay safe socially distanced outside. The main networking area with tables was outside with other fun things to do like play cornhole. Luckily, the weather was a beautiful June evening with the sun shining and our membership had a great time enjoying barbeque and some locally brewed beer.
