AUSTIN SMITH, SECOND HONORARY MEMBER By HOWARD T. BEHP. MAN, M.D. New York 21, N.Y. MR. PRESIDENT and Mem- bers of the SOCIETY: I consider it a great privilege to participate in this presentation of honor to Dr. Austin Smith. As most of you known, Dr. Smith is the Editor-in-Chief of the yourna/ of the American Medical Association. To those of you who are not familiar with Dr. Smith's background and other activities, you are perhaps wondering why this SocIV. TY has elected to award this high honor to him. As a friend of Dr. Smith's, and as a colleague on the American Medical Association's Committee on Cosmetics, I believe that I can explain the reason for recognizing Dr. Smith's activities. Dr. Smith first came to the American Medical Association in 1940 and shortly thereafter was appointed Secretary of the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry. In 1946, he was made Director of the Division of Therapy and Research-- an appointment which encompassed all the important councils of the American Medical Association, the fundamental sources responsible for the study, clarification and dis- semination of new ideas and thera- peutic concepts. Dr. Smith has also helped revise the U.S. Phar- macopoeia and the National Formu- lary, a task for which he was well suited by virtue of previous activi- ties as research associate and pro- fessorial lecturer in Pharmacy, and Science editor of the American Druggist. In 1949, he was accorded full recognition of his many talents by his appointment to the foremost editorial position in American medi- cine, namely, that of editor-in- chief of its leading publication, the )eournal of the American Medical Association. Under his able direc- tion, the )eournal has maintained its position as the leading medical pub- lication in the world, continued to make great strides in the dissemi- nation of knowledge and in an un- tiring search for medical progress. Of particular interest to us is the role played by Dr. Smith in the field of Cosmetic Chemistry. In 1948, the American Medical Association established a Committee on Cos- metics to examine the claims made for various cosmetic preparations and to determine the safety or harm- lessness of cosmetics. This Com- mittee has also undertaken an evalu- I00
