1 As we navigate the “new normal” that our society is facing in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic, we are grateful for the continued support of our loyal membership. As our Chapter leadership makes tough decisions regarding future meetings, it is heartening to reflect on all the wonderful education and social events we had in 2019. As I browse through the highlights of our Chapter activities during the past year, I continue to be energized by the spirit of volunteerism and passion for the cosmetics and personal care industry that shine through. Our membership is strong and vibrant as demonstrated by the exceptional education, networking, and social events held across greater North America throughout the year. In addition to the Chapter activities highlighted in this newsletter, I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you some organization-wide highlights from the past year. Membership: SCC membership exceeded 5,700 individuals globally, affirming that our efforts to deliver top-notch education opportunities, important peer connections, and innovative science are working. Education: The Society delivered several sell-out combination classroom/lab courses, highly-attended webinars on topics like ISO 16128 & the FDA Biopreferred Program, and 16 traditional CEP classroom courses. Chapters: Chapter services continued to be our focus and we provided ongoing training/support for Quickbooks managed 13 local chapter elections provided IT support added additional resources to the website reviewed multiple chapter event contracts and developed a new Chapter Rebate schedule with bonus incentives. NextGen Initiative: We expanded our relationships with colleges and universities globally and held the first Career Development Day on December 15th with over 100 registrants and more than a dozen schools and industry employers participating in the event. Chapter Activity Newsletter Vol. 50. No.1 Strategic Plan: The Board of Directors developed the organization’s first strategic plan, the goals of which are centered around Member Engagement, Chapter Value, Operational Excellence, and Awareness & Outreach. This plan will act as a roadmap for delivering a valuable membership experience for each of you. Collaborations: The Society partnered with organizations like AOCS, ICMAD, FDA and others to deliver our members a multi-faceted view of the issues facing the industry. Governance: Responding to the challenges faced by many of our chapters, Bylaws and Policy Manual were amended to allow for greater flexibility to address the changing needs of the volunteer landscape across our chapter network. While we’re proud of these accomplishments, we have more in store for 2020! Just a few of the exciting things we’re working on are: New IT systems & strategies that will allow us to provide a more customized, personal member experience. The online Media Library & Resource Center. Transitioning the first issue of 2020 of the Journal of Cosmetic Science to a digital format. The online speaker portal for our chapter leaders and local education chairs. An online career center for industry employers and potential employment candidates. 2020 is also exciting because it marks the 75th Anniversary of the SCC! Be on the lookout for special news, events and updates on our celebration. I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge my colleagues Latasha Archer, Kenisha Beaupierre, Colleen Daddino, and Sam Neely for their dedication to excellent member services and experiences in 2019. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to our dedicated volunteer leaders and our loyal members. Our success and longevity serving the cosmetics and personal care industry for 75 years (and counting!) would not be possible without you. I look forward to helping you shape the future of the SCC in the years to come. My sincere wishes for healthy and safe 2020 to you all. Erica L. O’Grady, CAE SCC Executive Director/CEO
