7 Carolina The Carolina chapter is thriving with terrific participation in our meetings and events, very strong sponsorship support from our member companies and excellent speakers to educate our members. We are proud of what we accomplished in 2019 and look forward to a successful 2020. Highlights from 2019 include three-chapter meetings, a two-day educational seminar along with steady membership numbers. Our first speaker of 2019 was Shannon Hess of Burt’s Bees with her presentation on “Responsible Sourcing in Natural Cosmetics”. This highlighted our February meeting held in downtown Durham, N C. Just a few of the valuable topics discussed were audit standards to improve an organization, an overview of different agencies suppliers may use to achieve responsible sourcing, awareness of the complexity of sourcing raw materials and basic information on ISO 16128. Our second meeting in April was located at High Point University in High Point, NC. We were very pleased to host a presentation from world-renowned clinical and research dermatologist Zoe Draelos, MD. Dr. Draelos’s presentation on “New Cosmetic Ingredient Concepts in Action” was extremely well received, interesting and educational. Thanks also to High Point University for hosting our meeting and as part of our gratitude, we gave the “Career in Cosmetic Chemistry” presentation to students. We had over 8 students from a chemistry/science degree track attend this meeting and their feedback was very positive. Our university sponsor, Dr. Christopher Fowler, commented that the students who attended were very inspired and excited by the career paths available to them in the Cosmetic science field. In August, we got together with the Mid-Atlantic chapter to co-sponsor an educational seminar. It was fun to work with another chapter to arrange the event as it gave us a chance to get to know each other and share responsibility for the event. It worked out very well. The seminar was at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC a fantastic spot for a meeting and a great place to visit. The two-day CEP course was taught by Randall Wickett, Ph. D. in Basic Skin Science and K.P. Ananth, Ph.D. in Advanced Skin Science. We had a wonderful turn out with over 70 people in attendance and we learned a lot about the basics on the stratum corneum to factors that can affect skin health. We also had a blast at the wine tasting! You shouldn’t have missed that event. During our final meeting in November we had the chapter officer installation ceremony and a technical presentation. This was held at the Pump House in Rock Hill, SC and the presentation was delivered by Duane Krzysik of Innospec Performance Chemicals on the topic of “Exploring new opportunities in cyclic-free formulating”. The presentation reviewed proposed legislation and explored a range of silicone blends to assist with cyclic-free evolution. Following the presentation our new officers were sworn into service and we immediately got to work with a board meeting to plan for 2020. What a year we will have in 2020! The big event will be the Naturally Kiawah Symposium to occur Sep 30 – Oct 2 in beautiful Kiawah Island, SC. The theme “Naturally Kiawah” will focus on environmentally friendly ingredients, greens chemistries and processes, marketing and consumer trends, and regulatory updates. In addition, a CEP course will be offered prior to the symposium. Of course, the chapter will continue to organize and host our regular chapter meetings and publish a newsletter. 8 Connecticut 2019 was a great year for the Connecticut chapter including a wonderful educational program as well as a fulfilled Golf Outing. We kicked off the year in January with Dr. Paul Lawrence giving a fantastic talk entitled, “Ancient Viruses and How They Influence Humanity” although a little scary at first to learn about these pathogens, Dr, Lawrence went on to explain how viruses now have benefits on food, pharmaceutical and even the cosmetic industries. In March, we welcomed Dr. Dave Clay, who spoke on SMART Silicones. He spoke about how the newest generations of silicone are now modified to achieve remarkable results even at very low levels. Our April meeting featured a talk by Belen Lemiuex entitled “Beeswax: The Bee’s Knees” who convinced us that Beeswax is an indispensable raw material in cosmetic formulations. September was a record month for the CT chapter as we opened the month with our largest dinner meeting of the decade where Dr. James Beumgartner set us all straight in his talk “Cannabis: Separating Fact from Fiction”. Jamie spoke about the farm bill and the benefits of industrial hemp. The following week, the chapter headed up to the Beautiful Lake of Isles Golf Course where our members enjoyed the beautiful weather and gorgeous views of the course. Our Ed Seminar was held in October at Zotos Intl where George Deckner gave a Next Gen seminar on cosmetic formulations. Topic included habits of highly innovative formulators, as well as a tool of innovation and a green formulations toolbox. Our last presentation of the year was in November where Alison Griffin gave a fun and informative talk on color trends “Decoding the Crystal Ball” where we learned that factors such as the economy, Hollywood and even the political atmosphere affect trending colors. Patricia Singh, Area I Director also joined us in November to install our 2020 Officers. Our new officers for 2020 will be Jennifer Macary (Chair), Faith Corbo (Chair-Elect), Nina Miotto (Secretary), and Tiffany Fielder (Treasurer). The CTSCC board has another great year planned, and we can’t wait to see everyone at our chapter meetings in 2020!
