15 APRIL 9, 2019 TOP Golf in Wooddale IL with Speaker Mariana Royer of Biostratege The topic was Bioactive for the Cosmetic and Nutraceutical Industry in which Mariana discussed her work on utilizing the by-products of the forestry industry to extract and produce natural actives for the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries that are high quality and from a green, sustainable source. An example of the actives produced include polyphenols and resveratrol. The meeting was in partnership with Women of Flavor and Fragrances Chapter WFFC. Career Day on Saturday, May 4, 2019. A workshop on interviewing, as well as resume reviews and an employer showcase were held as part of the Career Day. High School Chemistry program was held on Saturday, May 4, 2019. May 14, 2019 - Striking Balance: Living a Balanced Life in an Unbalanced World in Norridge, IL. Business Coach, Tom Kelly, covered the shifts you need to make to live a balanced life, including: what balance is, your beliefs around balance, how to know what you truly want, how to align your actions with your intentions, and some extreme time management tools. June 29, 2019 Engineering Days at the Museum of Science and Industry This event showcased a variety of engineering and science careers and gave kids and families a chance to dream, design and make! Elvia Isguerra From Bia Research Labs and Ling Chen from Solésence oversaw the MWSCC activity that hopefully will get more kids hooked on STEM and guided to the field of Cosmetic Science.

This year’s theme was “Cosmetic Science in the Digital Age”. MWSCC’s Tech Symposium is a day of Innovative Speakers, networking, and open forum discussions to drive success for our members in Cosmetic Science. At the Tech Symposium, we had six speakers who presented on the nuances and dynamics of Cosmetic Science in the Digital. The Tech Symposium is a roadmap to the themes, trends, challenges, and developments that keep MWSCC members on the cutting edge of innovation! We had 10 Student posters and Carly Hanson, Loyola University Chicago, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was our Student winner of a Trip to NY for the National SCC show in December. Her winning poster was, “Complexities of Carbonyl-Lewis Acid Interactions in Catalytic Systems”. CHEERS November 12, 2019 Our final meeting of the year was at the Café La Cave in Des Plaines, IL. We had our Annual Officer installations, Emeritus recognition and Awards meeting, including Toys for Tots as we do not have a holiday meeting or party. We had one of our own speaking at our dinner- Chris Boone, Application Development Specialist at Univar Solutions. The topic was “Why can’t I use parabens anymore?” and other stories of ingredients with bad press it seems every day the formulator’s palette of ingredients gets smaller and less effective. “Natural” products are on the rise and pushing out ingredients that have been used safely for years. He cited the studies that started the scares, and what they really showed. We explored a few ingredient stories and their fall from grace.
