35 In September, PhytoChemia presented a conference on the CBD topic. Cannabis contains more than 113 biologically active chemical compounds, including the best known two: delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). In a rapidly evolving legislative and technological context, cannabis-based cosmetic products attract a lot of interest. We’ve analyzed the current state of research into the topical use of cannabis compounds and learned about the current regulatory frameworks. We discussed, among other things, present and anticipated marketing options as well as the supply chain of this industry. Our education day was held in October in the Old Port of Montreal Science Centre and the theme was “worldwide formulation”. Christine Lafforgue Ph.D. from Paris-Saclay University and chair of French Society of Cosmetology talked about ethnic skin and hair types and the differences in skin/ hair structure and function. We’ve learned about different skincare needs according to the skin type and how to adapt a cosmetic formula accordingly. Gattefosse’s conference about the cultural sensory preferences covered all aspects of sensory analysis, sensory criteria around the globe and gave us some hints on how to formulate for international markets considering the climatic and ethnic aspects. Before we start exporting our cosmetic products, it is important to understand what regulations and laws we need to comply with in order to succeed and to avoid time and cost at customs. In his presentation François Viot brilliantly taught us how to do it. Our last event of the year was held at the end of November the Annual Holiday Dinner Dance aboard the Cavalier Maxim which was a great success in an unusual setting an ultimate dinner-cruise experience on the St. Lawrence River with entertainment, bar and DJ on the deck and a breathtaking view of the city. 36 has hosted its annual supplier social night in the past includes, Graceland - Home of Elvis Presley, Civil Rights Museum, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Peabody Place Museum of Oriental Art and Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art. This year’s venue was the oldest art museum in the state of TN “The Brooks Museum of Art”. Opened to the public in 1916, the design of the Brooks Museum building, was inspired by the Morgan Library in New York City. The Brooks Museum collection includes beautiful and breathtaking artifacts, such as paintings, sculptures, textile arts, decorative arts, ancient western art and much more. The event was a great success and was well attended by our fellow members and friends. In October we had a very informative lunch & learn session with Dr. Joy Roederer from Integrity Ingredients Corporation in Murfreesboro, TN. Dr. Roediger presented on the topic “Clean Beauty Elegant Sunscreen Technology Incorporating Mineral Sunscreens and Natural Boosting Actives”. As we all know, clean beauty is a growing trend in the industry and with new restrictions on some of the sunscreen actives it has been challenging for formulators to create simple elegant formulations. Dr. Roederer’s presentation included some great and innovative ideas to address these concerns. To close a great year, in November we had our final meeting which was our Officer Installation meeting. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Michelle Hines, SCC National Vice President-Elect for doing the honors. Last but not the least once again, I would like to thank all of our speakers, our chapter attendees, sponsors and my fellow chapter officers for a great year and their continuous support of the South East Chapter. Avantika Bandopadhya Society of Cosmetic Chemist- South East Chapter Chair 2019 Southeast The South East Chapter of Society of Cosmetic Chemist had an exciting, fun filled and educational 2019! This year we had three scientific meetings, a supplier social night and an officer installation meeting. Here is a brief summary of our chapter activities for this year: We kicked off 2019 with our first chapter meeting on March 21st in a beautiful city of southeastern TN, Chattanooga. It was a very informative and interactive presentation by our guest speaker Dr. Nelson Ayala. His presentation on “Wine, Roses, and Chocolate” gave us an opportunity to understand various sensorial attributes of successful cosmetic product development. Also, we got an opportunity to further enhance our knowledge about the art and science of evaluating tastes and scents in consumer products by tasting and smelling wines, chocolates, and natural herbs from around the world. Following our March meeting, we had another scientific meeting in April in Memphis, TN. The meeting’s technical presentation was on “Novel Preparation for Plant Derived, Water Soluble, Antimicrobial Medium Chain Esters”, by Jim Mosbaugh of Copperhead Chemical Company Inc. Jim provided an insightful talk on antimicrobial properties of medium chain fatty acid esters, such as glyceryl laurate (GML) and method of preparation of a specialized mixture of C12 esters that preserves the innate antimicrobial functions and benefits of GML. The next chapter meeting was our annual supplier social night in June. Every year the SE Chapter host its supplier social night at popular and historic sites in Memphis. Some of the most popular historic sites where the SE chapter
