37 Southwest Another great year for the SWSCC has come to an end. Along with our normal monthly Chapter meetings, we had other events as well. In March, we held our Meet & Greet Event at Pin Stack, which offered many activities for our members, from bowling to indoor rock climbing. This evening was enjoyed by all who attended. Our annual golf tournament was a huge success. We had numerous golfers turn out for this event. It turned out to be a great day for golf, and a lot of fun for everyone. In August, we held our Educational Day. This event was well attended, and the speakers offered great topics for the attendees. We also had a student poster session, with participants from local universities. We ended the year with our biggest event, our Holiday Party, which was again well attended, and offered a lot of fun for everyone. Many thanks to the SWSCC Board members, for all their hard work in helping to make these events possible. Thanks to all the volunteers, who got involved, and helped organize the big events. Finally, a big thanks to all the members and sponsors, who help keep this chapter going. It is because of your support, that our Chapter continues to be successful. Daniel Ramirez 2019 SWSCC Chair
38 St. Louis What a journey 2019 was for the St. Louis Chapter! In my 23 years of being a member and officer of this Chapter, 2019 will be remembered as one of extreme highs and extreme challenges. However, with the great leadership and support from the other members of the Chapter Board Sophie Bonham (Chair-Elect), Ashley McKinney (Secretary), Katherine Hazel (Treasurer) and Denisha Patel (Treasurer- Elect) we were able to navigate through it all and come out smiling on the other side. general was a busy year for the St. Louis SCC Chapter. Our first meeting of the year was held at Pastaria and featured a talk on the “Basics of Color Science” by Val Cosh from Konica Minolta. Next, for the first time ever in April, we held a joint meeting with the St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STL COP) at their location. Over 70 students from the STL COP were in attendance. Kelly Dobos, 2019 Society of Cosmetic Chemist President, gave a presentation on careers in the cosmetic and personal care field. We received great feedback from the officers of this school group, and we hope to hold this event annually. In August, over 40 SCC members attended a Continuing Education Program (CEP) on the “Practical Basics and Theory in Emulsion Technology” led by Mark Chandler from ACT Solutions Corporation at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel. Our annual September Scientific Symposium was held at Maggiano’s speakers and topics were: Susan Pungitore, Symrise Modern Product Protection: Trends and Solutions Renata Butikas, Stepan Green Surfactants for Sustainable Cosmetics Sudhir Baswan, Amway R&D Skin Photoprotection: Looking Beyond Sunscreens! Candy Hoseth, Amway Regulatory - Global Regulatory Trends and Justyce Jedlicka, Millipore Sigma Getting in the “Weeds” of the Cannabis Market and Use of Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) for the Analysis of Terpenes. Another well-attended event with fantastic learnings! Finally, our Annual Holiday Party was held at Bar 360 in November. We kept the event informal just a lively group from our small Chapter gathering for great food and fun conversation at this unique venue. We had a blast! Probably my favorite Holiday Party in recent memory. At the end of the year, we nominated Justyce Jedlicka from Millipore Sigma as our Speaker of the Year for her talk at our September Scientific Symposium, and Tiffany Collis (former Chapter Chair, long-time member) for our Chapter Merit Award. Congratulations to them both! 2019 was not without its challenges, however. Vijon Laboratories announced in September that they were moving their Research and Development department to Tennessee. (This was literally announced the same week as our SCC September Symposium!) Vijon has always been one of the largest supporters of the St. Louis Chapter, especially from a membership standpoint, and many of our past (and present!) leadership team worked there. This required the Chapter leadership team to “pause” - to determine the impact on our Board, and the Chapter as a whole. Some of the Vijon members, regardless of where they will be located, agreed to stay on as officers for this year. And we were excited that two other members from our Chapter stepped up to fill our open officer positions both of whom had never run for office. The 2020 St. Louis Chapter officer slate is: Chair: Sophie Bonham (Vijon) Chair-Elect: Cheryl Mitchell Secretary & Newsletter Editor: Dale Sanson Treasurer: Denisha Patel Treasurer-Elect: Ashley McKinney From what I have heard, 2020 looks to be another fantastic year for our Chapter! We hope that our National Officer friends will be able to join us at our events! Respectfully submitted, Christopher Heisig 2019 Chair, St. Louis Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists
