24 The 2019 Hans A. Schaeffer Award, sponsored by Lonza Personal Care, was presented to Roger McMullen, PhD (Ashland) for his paper entitled, “Evaluation of the Surface Properties of Hair with Acoustic Analysis”. This award is given annually for the Most Innovative Paper presented at the previous Annual Scientific Meeting. The co-authors of this paper include Tyler Schiess, Lidia Kulcsar, Linda Foltis, and Timothy Gillece. The 2019 Shaw Mudge Award, sponsored by the Mudge Family, was awarded to Nadine Pernodet, PhD (The Estee Lauder Companies) for her paper entitled, “The New Frontiers of Innovation in the Cosmetic Industry”. This award is given for the best paper presented at the preceding Annual Scientific Meeting. The 2019 Des Goddard Award was presented to Hani Fares (Ashland) for his Journal Article entitled, “Investigating Film Properties of Polymers Used in Anhydrous Sunscreen Formulations Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (Sem): Polymer/Polymer Interactions and their Relation to Vapor Transmission”, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science Vol. 69 No. 3. This award is given annually for the the Most Innovative Paper on the topic of Polymer Science related to Cosmetics or Personal Care, presented at the previous Annual Scientific Meeting or published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science. The co-authors of this paper include William Thompson, Diane Kennedy, Timothy Gillece, Roger L. McMullen, and Larry Senak. The 2019 Society of Cosmetic Chemists Award, sponsored by The Hallstar Company, was awarded to Helen Yang, for her paper entitled “Blue Light Science 101: Harmful or Helpful for The Skin?”. This award is given annually for the Best Paper that makes the greatest scientific contribution to knowledge in the field of protecting against or ameliorating damage to human skin caused by exposure to UV radiation presented at the Society’s previous Annual Meeting. The 2019 Joseph P. Ciaudelli Award, sponsored by Croda, was presented to father & son - Asao Yamauchi, PhD & Kiyoshi Yamauchi, PhD (both of Osaka Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology) for their article entitled, “New Aspects of the Structure of Human Scalp Hair-II: Tubular Structure and Material Flow Property of the Medulla”, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science Vol. 69 No. 1. This award is given annually for the Best Article appearing in the Journal of Cosmetic Science on the subject of hair care technology.
25 STUDENT POSTER The Student Poster Showcase is held annually to promote student research in the Cosmetics industry. The Poster Awards are sponsored by DD Chemco. Members of the Committee on Scientific Affairs judged the posters. FIRST PLACE was Polina Tsupko (The City College of New York) for her poster, “Wax Free Lip Balms: Trehalose-based Molecular Gels as an Alternative to Waxes in Cosmetic Formulations” SECOND PLACE was Chandra Ade-Browne (University of Cincinnati) for her poster, “Targeted Rheological Modification of Surfactant Systems via Fatty Alchohol and Ethoxylation Manipulation” THIRD PLACE was Xu (Susie) Kang (University of Cincinnati) for her poster, “Acne Drug in Cages: Controlling Skin Irritation and Improving Stability of Benzoyl Peroxide through a Supramolecular Methodology” FOURTH PLACE was Marzieh Mirzamani (University of Cincinnati) for her poster, “Structural Rearrangements in Micellar Assemblies with Addition of a Perfume Mixture and Cosolvent”
