21 Awards 2020 Frontiers of Science Lecture Award was presented to Scott A. Jackson, PhD (National Institute of Standards and Technology) for his presentation entitled, “Standards for Microbiome Measurements: Supporting the Translation of Innovative Applications of the Human Microbiome”. At NIST, Scott is currently the leader of the Complex Microbial Systems Group in the Biosystems and Biomaterials Division. In this current role, Scott is leading efforts to improve microbiome and metagenomic measurements by organizing inter-lab studies, developing reference materials and reference methods, and developing in vitro tools that allow us to better understand microbial community resilience and evolution. This award recognizes a speaker who has achieved exceptional national or international stature in the scientific community and for delivering a lecture at the 74th Annual Scientific Meeting. 2020 Henry Maso Keynote Lecture Award, sponsored by Siltech Corporation and the Maso Family, was presented to Tom Szaky (Terracycle) for his presentation entitled, “Recycling and Reuse Before, During and After Covid-19”. Tom Szaky is the founder and CEO of TerraCycle, a global leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams. This award recognizes an outstanding lecturer of the 74th Annual Scientific Meeting, specifically selected by the COSA Committee. 2020 Maison G. de Navarre Medal Award, the Society’s highest honor, was presented to Howard A. Epstein, PhD (EMD Performance Materials). Dr. Epstein has authored chapters in various cosmetic technology textbooks, including Harry’s Cosmeticology, and holds eight patents and two patent applications. Howard has also previously served as editor of the SCC’s Journal of Cosmetic Science and is a member of the International Academy of Dermatology. He is on the editorial board of the dermatological journals, Clinics in Dermatology and SKINmed, representing the cosmetics industry to dermatologists. We are honored to present him with this award and look forward to all of his continued contributions to the industry!
22 The 2020 Merit Award was presented to Martha Tate, PhD (Tate Science). Our policy manual describes the award as recognizing a member of the Society for distinguished contributions, achievements and service to the Society on a National Level. Martha has been an engaged and contributing member since the day she joined SCC. We are delighted to present the Merit Award for her numerous contributions during her nearly 30-year membership, including lecturing at various education events, serving on the education advisory committee, volunteering countless hours of her time, and much more toward the advancement of cosmetic science. The SCC was pleased to honor Gary Agisim (posthumously) with the 2020 Robert A. Kramer Lifetime Service Award. We are presenting this award posthumously to Gary Agisim in recognition of his service and contributions to SCC during his 40+ years of active membership. Gary’s vibrant personality, his colorful vest collection, and his ability to share technical information in an exciting and engaging way will be missed. A beloved SCC member who passed away on May 15, 2020 from COVID-19 related complications, Gary was well-known and respected for his extensive industry knowledge and service to others. Gary was a frequent speaker in-demand at Chapter events for many years. He also served the Society in various roles during his membership including Area Councilor, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Chair, Area Director, national Committee Member, and various national Officer seats culminating in his role as Society President in 2009. The 2020 Florence Wall Women in Cosmetic Chemistry Award, sponsored by Rodan + Fields, was presented to Nava Dayan, PhD (Dr. Nava Dayan LLC) recognizes a woman for her significant accomplishments to the cosmetic industry through her technical contributions, leadership skills, and business excellence. Dr. Dayan is representative of the stellar women in this industry who have made significant contributions while serving as an example of leadership and passion for future generations. In her 30 years of experience, Nava has offered a wide range of services to the Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic, Personal Care, Research Entities, Regulatory Agencies and Academic Institutions through her consulting company, Dr. Nava Dayan LLC. She has worked on inventions that resulted in many patent applications, delivered 100+ oral presentations, has 150 publication credits in numerous industry-respected journals and in five books, and served as educator and advisory board committee member at several professional organizations including: American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientist, Society of Cosmetic Chemists, and The Center for Dermal Research. She has also written a monthly column for the HAPPI magazine.
