9 We had an amazing year thanks to the hard work of our dedicated volunteers! We are entering 2021 with goals to continue improving the professionalism and education in our industry, promote high standards for research, strengthen our own education through the sharing of science, and ultimately advance cosmetic science. Let’s mark the end of this truly memorable and unprecedented year. Although 2020 may have appeared to be a year of dismay and a year that “didn’t happen,” it slowed us down and brought us to appreciate what we have. From all of us in the Michigan Chapter, may 2021 bring hope, promise, and courage. Best wishes for a wonderful New Year! * * * * * * * * * We asked our Board Members and Committee volunteers to share photographs of their favorite memories in 2020. 10 Mid-Atlantic Many words can be used to describe the year 2020 - unexpected, loss, surreal, chaotic, uncertainty just to name a few. The COVID 19 pandemic gave new meaning to virtual meetings. During the early part of 2020, the MASCC planned our first event of the year, a cherry blossom lunch cruise along the Potomac River in Washington, DC. The event was titled “Japanese Beauty with Water,” and the presenter was industry scientist Asuka Imai from Kao USA, Inc. Sadly, we had to cancel the event due to the COVID 19 pandemic. The MASCC would like to thank our speaker Asuka Imai as well as all who registered. The MASCC called 2019 the “year of partnership.” During 2020 this partnership continued as the Area IV chapters teamed up to present “Tech Talks” webinars. Area IV kicked off Tech Talks during the summer of 2020. In June, Jamie Baumgartner, Ph.D., from Panacea Life Sciences and Dan O’Neill from Charkit Chemicals presented - “An Overview of Industrial Hemp: 2020 Challenges.” The next webinar was held in July, Tony O’Lenick from Nascent Technologies Corporation presented - “Innovating with Minimally Disruptive Formulations (MDF)” In August, Anne Mu from Evonik Industries presented “Enabling Customers to Leverage Sustainability in Formulations.” Also, in August Kristin Brancato, Ph.D., Jason Hargreaves, Ph.D., and John Chase from Botaneco, Inc. presented “An Introduction into Oleosomes and its Applications in Cosmetics.” The summer Tech Talks were successful with more than 250 attendees at each. During the Fall, the Tech Talks continued. Dennis Abbeduto from Colonial Chemical, Inc. presented - “Surfactants: Meeting Today’s Market Needs.” The MASCC Board Transition meeting was held virtually in December. The 2021 MASCC Officers are: Nelson Ayala (Chair), Cynthia Johnson (Chair-Elect), Antionette Barclay (Secretary), and Katrika Shaw (Treasurer). The Mid-Atlantic Chapter would like to thank all the speakers who presented during the Tech Talks webinars. We would also like to thank all the Area IV chapters as well as the national office. We are looking forward to 2021. Please join us at our meetings this year, feel free to bring your fellow colleagues and friends as well!!
