29 The most recent EU specifications for nano TiO2 and ZnO are especially complicated. EU also has a special notification and labeling requirement on nanomaterials, to which some grades of TiO2 and ZnO belong. Many of our officer installations and area meetings were held via Zoom. Area IV Director Michelle Linscott installed the new Southeast officers: Chair: Stephen Baldwin, Chair Elect: Tami Thomas, Secretary: Cubie Lamb, and Treasurer: John Wagner. A virtual transition meeting was held in December where SCC National Treasurer, Mark Chandler installed the new Mid-Atlantic officers: Chair: Nelson Ayala, Chair-Elect: Cynthia Johnson, Secretary: Tonie Barclay, and Treasurer: Katrika Shaw. The Area IV Board Members attended the annual COCA meeting via Zoom. The Southeast Chapter presented the First Annual SCC Southeast Chapter Scholarship Awards to three graduate students: Natalie Cox studying Cell & Bioprocess Engineering at Tufts University School of Engineering and Bioengineering, Asia Hubbard studying Cosmetic Science at the University of Cincinnati, and Jessica Tappan studying Biology at the University of Memphis. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter had high expectations for a successful first- quarter Japanese Beauty and Cultural Event aboard Spirit Cruises during the DC Cherry Blossom Festival. New opportunities for collaboration came about as the year unfolded and virtual relationships and friendships were forged. Angelia Peavey, MASCC Newsletter Editor, was awarded the 2020 Chapter Merit Award for her contributions throughout the year. The Mid-Atlantic in conjunction with National kicked off the series in June with James Baumgartner, Ph.D., President of Panacea Life Sciences who gave a presentation on the current challenges faced with industrial hemp. Dr. Baumgartner provided an overview of the industrial production of hemp and various cannabinoids, their biological significance, and the current regulatory climate associated with the growing market of cannabis-related products. He was joined by Dan O’Neill, Vice-President, Personal Care Division of Charkit Chemical who gave practical insight on the cosmetic application of various cannabis-derived ingredients.
30 With Sarah Thiewes of Glenn Corp. Sarah is a graduate of The College of New Jersey with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She began her career as a formulation chemist for personal and pet care products at a contract manufacturer in southern New Jersey in 2002. From there she has worked for two major ingredients suppliers in a variety of roles including Technical Service, Marketing, and Product Management. In 2016 she joined Glenn Corp, part of Azelis Americas as the Technical Development Manager and Tristate CACS. Sarah was able to deliver a dynamic presentation on Starch Chemistry for Personal Care because more consumers today are seeking more natural sounding INCI names on their Personal Care Products pushing formulators to look at alternatives for tried-and-true ingredients. While starch is not new to the industry, many formulators are either not familiar with how to work with starches in their formulas, what benefits starch can bring, or both. Starch can be a great natural alternative to some of the synthetic ingredients some consumers and brands are looking to avoid. This presentation was designed to provide a background on starch chemistry and highlight the benefits of native and modified starches in a variety of Personal Care formulations. As we conclude 2020, and prepare for 2021, we can assure you that our enthusiasm has not diminished. We go into 2021 with very experienced and thoughtful leaders hoping to renew the value of in-person meetings as well as honing the value attained by the virtual seminars. The Florida, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast Chapter would like to thank all the speakers who presented in our TechTalks and in-person meetings in 2020. We would also like to thank the National Office and the Carolina Chapter for partnering with us this year. We would also like to thank all of our members we are grateful for each of you and look forward to 2021. Lastly, we invite you to join us at any of our upcoming 2021 virtual (or in-person) events and encourage you to stay safe. Southwest Dear Members and Colleagues, In 2020, the working environment changed, and we experienced more virtual collaboration! I missed being able to smile face-to- face, shake hands, or even give hugs! But we had to make rapid changes so we could continue providing members with education and the trends of the year. In January and February, we were able to have onsite chapter meetings. Then COVID-19 hit us, and we had to cancel the March/April/May meetings. It took us some time to figure out this virtual world, but in June, we held our first virtual Educational Chapter meeting which was a huge success. We went on to have three more successful virtual meetings in Sept, Oct and Nov with a very high attendance rate. In fact, we had higher attendance than the traditional onsite meetings. These meetings were held during the lunch hour, and I feel people really enjoyed that it didn’t take travel time away from work. Although we weren’t able to have the meet and greet (I was really looking forward to this one as it was at a winery and I had so many plans), Supplier’s Day or the Holiday Party, we still had the golf tournament. We had around 100 players that were able to safely socialize and enjoy a day of golf on a beautiful sunny Texas day in November!
