46 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS CONCLUSIONS The methodology described presents a means of rapidly estimating the N-nitroso content of cosmetic preparations. Nitrite can also be determined on the sample extract. The detection limits using a 2 gm sample are 0.002 ppm NNO-N or 0.02 /zg/gm NDELA and 0.002 /zg/NO2-N gm. Reproducibility for both nitrite and nitrosamine were less than 13% with recoveries of greater than 82%. Although the method does not distinguish specific N-nitroso compounds, it does provide a rapid screening technique. The ease of sample preparation for both nitrite and nitrosamine presents a significant decrease in the time of analysis when compared to spectrophotometric and species specific techniques.
