328 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS CHEMICAL FORMULARY, Volume VIII, H. Bennett, Editor-in-Chief, 448 pages, indexed. Chemical Publishing Co., Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y. 1948. Price $7.00. The Editor-in-Chief has gathered a host of reputable editors to con- tribute to the eighth volume of the well-known series, The Chemical Formulary. Readers should not get the im- pression that each successive volume replaces a previous one. Indeed not, each volume supplements the ear- lier issues and brings the subject matter up-to-date. One does not recognize a con- tributing authority on cosmetics, although a number of good men on soaps and detergents are listed with a couple of qualified food and flavor authorities, among others. The text as usual appears in alpha- betical sequence starting with ad- hesives and ending with textiles f•51- lowed by a chapter on miscellane- ous products. Better proofreading would pre- vent the appearance of glycerol on ß one part of a page and glycerin on the other (p. 44). There is a lack of consistency in formulas 1 and 2 on page 51 on page 59 sulfonated lauryl alcohol is mentioned but it should be the sulfated derivative. In formula 10 on page 76, of is used in place of or. . The material in the cosmetic sec- tion covers the patents to some ex- tent and the general cosmetic liter- ature. section of the seriel..hasmanhim.librariesbehooves invariably been weak.
This It the editor-in-chief to get a good or two to edit this section for Naturally, all progressive and cosmetic chemists will want this I fund of knowledge added to the pre- vious editions as a useful reference. --M. G. DEN.
