COSMETICS RESEARCH all ranges of pH value and through- out all degrees of polarity. Liter- ally thousands of interesting appli- cations may result from their use. This new field of study promises one key to open the secret doors of many a research problem related to the skin. This most extensive or- gan of the body, which is truly the foundation upon which cosmetic change should be effected, has been less responsive to efforts to produce a demonstrable result than the ap- pendages. Perhaps this is because the skin is a living organ. Cos- metic science must look long and carefully to other scientific fields for newer tools. Perhaps some in- terference with dermatology will develop as both sciences lead to- ward a cleaner, healthier organ. Fortunately, the researcher is free to work in both fields at once and can leave to the manufacturers the vexing problems of legal conflict.
