SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS OF GREAT BRITAIN A special scientific meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of Great Britain was held on March 3rd, in the ChemistryLectureTheater of Chelsea Polytechnic, London. The guest speaker for the evening was Professor Harold Burton, D.Sc., Ph.D., F.R.I.C., of King's College of Household and Social Science, University of London. Professor Burton spoke on "Some Aspects of the Oxidative Dyeing of Keratinous Protein Fibers." A brief abstract of his paper is given below. Also present, in addition to members of the Society, were some senior stu- dents of Chelsea Polytechnic and a member of Professor Burton's staff. A brief discussion period followed the lecture--Professor Burton re- plying to Mr. Frank Arkins, Mr. James Bather, Dr. H. K. Dean, and others. Questions referred to relative toxicity and dermatological action color range potentialities uniform penetration and the im- provement of" take" by the addition of wetting agents such as sulfated fatty alcohols and the need for further specialized work on the dye- ing of living human hair with color- less triphenols of the type described by the speaker. The sincere thanks of the Society were also accorded to Dr. J. F. J. Dippy and Dr. H. K. Dean, of Chelsea Polytechnic, for their courtesy in allowing the Society the use of the lecture theater. ANNUAL MEETING The Annual Meeting was held at The Tailor and Cutter Hall on May 3, 1950. The Council and OfFicers of the Society were duly elected: Chairman, F. V. Wells Vice-Chair- man, J. Bather Hon. Secretary, H. Holmes and Hon. Treasurer, E. Polan. Members of Council: F. Arkins, R. T. Dobson, R. G. Harry, A. W. Middleton, and J. Pickthall. A Discussion Meeting was called for June 23, 1950, on the subject "Deterioration Problems That Be- set the Manufacturer of Cosmetic and Toilet Preparations." Among those who joined in the discussion were R. T. Dobson, Jack Pickthall, F. V. Wells, W. P. Pepper, and Dr. H. K. Dean a digest of the dis- cussion is expected to be published in the JOURN^L. The meeting was held at the Chelsea Polytechnic, Chemistry Lecture Theater.
NECROLOGY R•.•. MAURICE GATTEFOSSI•, internationally known writer-chem- ist on cosmetic subjects, recently died in French Morocco at the age of 69. He was the founder of the French Trade Journal, La Parfumerie Mo- derne and the author of 29 books on cosmetics and perfumery sub- jects. He first produced terpeneless oils in France and was a pioneer in the isolation and use of many perfumery chemicals and floral essences. His last book was titled "The Technique of Beauty Products" published in London in 1949. At the time of his death he was writing a book on one of his hobbies, namely, the use of odor in medicine.
