258 JOURNAL OF TI-IE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS During an interval in the dancing which followed, some fascinating and baffling feats of magic were performed by Mr. E. J. Crook, a member of the Society. To mark the tenth anniversary of the foundation of the Society the menu card contained the history of the Annual Dinner-Dance and a review of the development of the Diploma Course. Mr. F. Riley, Hon. Secretary of the Society, must be warmly congratu- lated and thanked for his achievement in organising a most enjoyable evening. Annual General Meeting THE tenth Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on 16th May, 1958, at 55, Park Lane, London, W. 1, with the President, Mr. J. Pickthall, F.R.I.C., in the chair. The Report of the Council for 1957/8 was presented by the President, who mentioned the difficulty of obtaining suitable lecture papers from members of the Society engaged within the cosmetic industry proper, and stated that time and time again it was found that members were unable to present papers largely because of the failure to obtain their employers' permission to do so. He pleaded most eloquently for a general breaking down of these barriers, for less secrecy in cosmetics practice and for the wider dissemination of information and knowledge to the benefit of members generally. The President also paid tribute to Dr. A. W. Middle- ton and Mr. F. Riley for their unremitting work on behalf of the Society. The Report of the Council and that of the Hon. Treasurer were adopted unanimously. The following were elected for 1958/9: President: R. H. Marriott, D.Sc., F.R.I.C. Vice-President .' H. W. Hibbott, M.Sc., Ph.D., A.R.I.C. Hon. Treasurer .' R. E. SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS OF GREAT BRITAIN 259 After the result of the elections was announced, Mr. Pickthall asked Dr. Marriott to take the chair. Dr. Marriott then thanked the members for having again invited him to be President, although he voiced his regret at the circumstances which had prevented Dr. A. W. Middleton from accepting this high office, after so many years of untiring work. He also stated that he was sorry that Mr. Pickthall could not continue for his second year as President and stressed that it was commendable of Mr. Pickthall not to seek re-election when doubts existed of his ability to do justice to the office, due to pressure of work. The Hon. Auditor, Mr. A. W. English, was thanked for his work and re-elected for the ensuing year. The Annual Meeting was followed by an informal dinner, with Mr. F. V. Wells as Guest of Honour. Mr. J. Pickthall, in proposing the toast to the Guest of Honour, traced the beginnings of the Society, mentioning the Formation Meeting, held on 7th October 1948, through the joint efforts of Mr. M. G. deNavarre (American Society) and Mr. Wells. In his response, Mr. Wells thanked the members for inviting him and wished the Society well for the future. Mr. Bell proposed the toast to all Founder Members. 1958-59 Programme LECTURES before the Society will be given on the following dates: Tuesday, 14th October 1958 Friday, 14th November 1958 Wednesday, 17th December 1958 Friday, 23rd January 1959 Monday, 16th February 1959 Monday, 16th March 1959 Venue: The Royal Society of Arts, John Adam Street, London, W.C.2.
