Price 37 shillings. The original French text preceded the publication of this translation by five years (1955). It is men- rioned in the publisher's note that discoveries and advances made in the interim have been added, thus essentially making the English edition a revision rather than just an ordinary translation. Taking but one isolated instance, page 173 discusses the only cosmetic application of radioactive tracers. In fact this reference is to a news release rather than the original article which appeared in the J. Soc. COSMETIC CHEMISTS, about ten years ago. There have been quite a number of publications on this subject since that time. Chapter 5, .dealing with "radio- active tracers m industry," has ten pages of bibliography, among which are 19 dated 1956 and six dated 1957, the latest given. Among 60 page references, five are in 1956, one in 1957 and four in 1958, the latest shown. The author's forte appears to be in the area of chemical reactions, utilizing radioactive tracers, rather than in the industrial application of the principle. The wide application of radioactive tracers in medicine is not mentioned at all. Applications in floor waxes, detergency, physi- ology or foods could not be found. Although Irene Joliot-Curie writes in the foreword to this book that "in the domains of chemistry and industry ..... their application is comparatively little known," re- ferring to radioisotopes, the present work doesn't shed very much light on the industrial applications, although it may in the area of chemistry.--M.
