ANNUAL REPORT 1963-64 365 Frazer, Professor of Medical Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the Univer- sity of Birmingham. The attendance was 282. Committees The extension in the Society's activities has resulted in an increase in the number of committees and also in the number of meetings required by each committee. The following committees met regularly :- Scientific Committee Education Committee Membership Committee Publication Committee Symposium and Exhibition Committee Programme Committee Scientific Committee The Toxicology sub-group of this committee has spent much of its time investigating the controversy over an alleged association between the use of hair sprays and lung disease. With the able assistance of Dr. Golberg and Professor Worden a detailed examination of the evidence was under- taken. As a result, the committee published in January 1964 (1) a report in which it concluded that the evidence for such an association was extremely slight. Other subjects under discussion are the hazards of aerosol propel- lants, and the preparation of toxicity test methods. The Analytical sub-group published a preliminary report on the Deter- mination of Anionic Sulphates in January (2). Further work remains to be done on this subject. A collaborative study on the determination of hexa- chlorophene in toilet and cosmetic products is nearing completion, and the committee hopes to investigate the identification of colouring matters in the near future. Relationship with other Bodies--Recognition As presaged in the last Annual Report, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Pharmaceutical Society has actively co-operated in the hexa- chlorophene determination and now sends a representative to meetings of the Analytical group. Co-operation with the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain was carried a step further earlier this year, when it was decided to hold a joint symposium on "Preservatives and Antioxidants" in London in November 1964. A direct approach to the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee resulted in an invitation to apply for membership and our application has been recommended by the Steering Committee. It will come before the full committee on the 2nd June. The Society's election has now been confirmed. At various times throughout the year we have been approached by the Board of Trade, the B.B.C. and publishers of books and encyclopedias for (1) J. Soc. Cosmetic Chemists 15 45 (1964). (2) J. Soc. Cosmetic Chemists 15 33 (1964).
366 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS our views on certain scientific aspects of cosmetics. The Council feels that this is a direct result of our more aggressive policy in making known the aims and objects of the Society. The Future The Council believes that the range of activities outlined in the report indicates the progress which has been made by the Society in the last year. Each year its activities are extended and its sphere of influence expanded. The future work of the Society must be directed towards improving its scientific standing and ways in which this may be achieved are constantly under review. It may be necessary at some time in the future, particularly if the Society is accorded some official recognition, to consider the provision of permanent office accommodation and a full-time paid secretary. Although this stage may not be reached for many years we have thought it desirable to investi- gate the facilities which are open to us. Annual General Meeting The Fifteenth Annual General Meeting of the Society took place on 28th May, as usual at 55 Park Lane. The meeting was noteworthy for the presence of Mr. R. A. Kramer, President of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Mr. Kramer, who is also the Hon. Organiser of the 3rd Congress of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists which will take place in New York during June 1964, gave an outline of the many functions that are being planned for this event. The Annual Report was presented by the President, Mr. S. J. Bush (J. pp. 362-366). In the voting for three new Members of Council, Mr. E. K. Clarke, Dr. H. W. Hibbott and Dr. J. J. Mausner, were elected. The officers for 1964-65 are :- President: Vice-President: Immediate Past President: Hon. Secretary: Hon. Treasurer: Mr. A. Herzka. Mr. R. Clark. Mr. S. J. Bush. Mr. D. E. Butterfield. Mr. R. E. Spate. The meeting was followed by the customary informal supper, which was also attended by Dr. E. H. Mercer, of the National University of Canberra, Australia. Dr. Mercer, who was present at the recent inaugural meeting of the Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists, was passing through London on his way to New York for the forthcoming I.F.S.C.C. Congress, where he will be presented with the Literature Award of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.
