ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Society was fortunate in finding two such active acting officers, and it was to be regretted that Mr. Dobson was no longer available as honorary treasurer. The balance sheet and accounts were presented, the satisfactory nature of the Society's financial affairs was appreciated, and the Acting Honorary Treasurer's report accepted unanimously. Mr. C. Young and Mr. M.P. Bailey acted as scrutineers for the counting of votes for the election of officers and members of council Mr. R. T. Dobson as new President and Mr. F. Riley, Honorary Secretary, were elected unopposed. Mr. J. Pickthall, Vice-President, Mr. H. J. Lovell, Honorary Treasurer, and Messrs. H. Holmes, K. G. Johnson and A. W. Middleton, Members of Council, were duly elected as a result of the postal ballot. Mr. E. Polan was unanimously appointed Honorary Auditor. After Dr. Marriott had announced the results of the election and had congratulated Mr. Dobson on his assumption of the office of President, Mr. Dobson rose and expressed his, and also the meeting's, appreciation of Dr. Marriott's work for the Society. JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS He said: "Mr. President, Ofcers and Members of Council, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are all very conscious of the expansion in activities and the increase in strength and prestige which has occurred in this Society over the past three years, during which time you, sir, have been President. Those of us who have had the privilege of working closely with you on the Society's affairs appreciate that this progress has been largely due to your inspiring leadership and the magnitude of the work you yourself have undertaken. "I have no wish, sir, to cause you any embarrassment by dwelling upon your personal achievement in consolidating the foundations of this Society which were laid down by your predecessor, Mr. F. V. We]Is, but I am sure that my fellow officers, members of council and all members and associates present this evening will approve my words when I say on their behalf, thank you, Mr. President, for the wonderful achievement you have accom- plished through your leadership and personal efforts during your term of office. "Mr. President, with your permission I propose a most hearty vote of thanks for all the good work you have undertaken on behalf of this Society, and with this proposal may I couple the wish that you will continue to give us the active benefit of your most valuable support for many years to come. "Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand and join with me in showing your appreciation of your President's work on the Society's behalf." The meeting stood and applauded Dr. Marriott, and in reply he said that he was glad to be of help to the Society and had always been willing, and would continue also to be willing, to do everything he possibly could to improve the status of the cosmetic chemist. He had been helped in his office by his colleagues on the Council and he was pleased that he would be able to continue with his work for the Society as an ex-ofcio member of Council. A vote of thanks to the members and officers of the Council for 1954-55, proposed by Mr. A. R. Keast and seconded by Mr. L. O. Gatland, was carried unanimously, as was another proposed by Mr. A. B. Bell, seconded by Mr. E. Polan, to Mr. Dobson for the manner in which he had presented the Society's accounts. The meeting closed with an announcement by the President that next year's lectures would be held at the Royal Society of Arts, John Adam Street, and that the Annual Dinner and Dance would again be held at the Caf• Royal, Regent Street. After a short interval for refreshments a large gathering of members and friends "reassembled" to hear the retiring President's address on "pH Value and Implications." 288
