ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT 63 Lauffer, has just completed its work and deserves our thanks for the selec- tion of a most excellent slate of candidates. The vote is in--you have spoken--and I am now happy to announce the results of the election: President-Elect--Warren Dennis Secretary--Robert Kramer Treasurer--Lester Conrad Directors--Walter Edman John Longfellow William Mueller Martin Rieger Before closing this report, I again wish to state that the presentation, discussion and publication of scientific research is the backbone of all S.C.C. meetings--local, regional and national. Beyond this simple fact, there remains only great diversity in areas of detail. In the November 9, 1959, issue of Chemical and Engineering News, the feature article by Dr. P. A. Roussel of du Pont was entitled "The Responsibilities of the Chemist." Among many responsibilities mentioned by Dr. Roussel, I felt duty bound to bring one of these to your attention. In essence, he reported that "Im- plicit in the discipiine of fact is the scientist's obligation co expose his work to the scrutiny and criticism of his colleagues that therein lies the funda- mental validation procedure of all science that by publication of the research, the validation procedure is implemented while, at the same time, enriching the heritage of scientific knowledge." In light of this thought and as one of the last acts of my administration, may I urge all of you to greater participation in our scientific programs and seminars. To carry out the important functions of the SOCiETY'S program many Committees with many members were in operation in 1960. No statistics, regardless of their magnitude, can measure the significance of these Com- mittees. Without them, the SOCIETY would be less virile, its activities more restricted, and its operation more costly. As I reflect over this year, the time that I served as President of this great SOCIETY, ] am deeply grateful and truly appreciative for all the kind- nesses and assistance rendered to me by the Committee Chairmen and you, the general membership. For all this, I sincerely thank you.
