Define allergic dermatitis and discuss the mechanism by which it occurs. SECTION B 1. A sample of powdered talc has a density of 2.7, and a bulk density of 0.8. Discuss the significance of these two terms and describe the methods of determination. 2. Discuss the requirements for a lipstick pigment, and the various cate- gories of insoluble pigment available. 3. Discuss the structure and applications of the silicaceous materials used in cosmetic powders. 4. Discuss possible causes of rancidity in lipsticks. What steps would you take to avoid the development of rancidity ? SUCCESSFUL CANDIDA TES Eleven out of sixteen candidates were successful. For seven of the successful candidates this was only year A of the course. Diplomas were awarded to the four successful candidates who have now completed the course. I. R. GUCKLHORN Miss I. F. Gucklhorn, because of his outstanding performance during the examinations.

Gucklhorn Symposium on The Toxicology of Cosmetic Materials A SYMPOSIUM on the Toxicology of Cosmetic Materials, organised by the Society, took place at Leamington Spa on 19th and 20th November 1963. It was attended by 86 participants, including visitors from Belgium, Germany Holland, and U.S.A. On the evening of Tuesday, 19th November, delegates attended a Civic Reception, given by His Worship the Mayor of Leamington Spa, at the Royal Pump Room. On Wednesday morning, 20th November, the Mayor of Leamington, Councillor F. I. Eaton, J.P., welcomed the delegates, and the President of the Society, S. J. Bush, Esq., F.R.I.C., not only thanked the Mayor for his kind words and for the civic hospitality, but also formally opened the Symposium. One of the papers is to be found in page 3 of this issue, and most of the others will be published in the Journal in due course.
