EVALUATION OF OCULAR DECONGESTANTS IN RABBITS 409 min. It was noted that some formulations cleared the eye in 9. min. These eyes would be stable at 30 min posttest. However, when challenged, they would re- spond with an irritation reaction. Thus this was interpreted to indicate that a cleared eye would be stable if not repeatedly insulted. It was found that the addition of hydroxypropylmethyleellulose, 0.5% or less, could confer longer duration of activity to a formula containing an effective concentration of hy- droxyamphetamine HBr. This was determined with 30 min repeated insults with 5% sodium chloride. Hydroxypropylmethyleellulose is now employed to significantly prolong the duration of action of opthalmie preparations (5), and other agents are also suggested for the same purpose (2). CONCLUSIONS An assay has been developed to test standard and experimental ocular de- congestant formulas in rabbits. This assay is capable of discriminating the de- gree of activity for chemicals and formulations under consideration for use as ocular decongestants. (Received December 3, 1974) REFERENCES (1) J. H.
