JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS 429 HANDBOOK OF MOISTURE AND CON- TROL: PRINCIPLES, TECHNIQUES, I'LICATtONS, Vol. I, by A. Pande, Shri- ran Institute for Industrial Research, Delhi, India. Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York, 1974. 266 pages. Price 828.50. Volume I of this four-volume mon- ograph consists of four chapters. The first deals with the properties of wa- ter (chemical, physical, and electri- cal). Statistical analysis and sampling methods are included in the first chapter. Chapter II is concerned with grav- imetric methods of water determina~ tion. These methods which we take for granted, are explained in theory and in practice. Oven drying, vac- uum oven drying, dessication, infra- red radiation semiautomatic mea- surements, the thermobalance, and thermal analysis techniques are all covered in some detail with citations of practical examples. Chapter III covers azeotropic dis- ti]lation and chromatographic meth- ods. The historical development of azeotropic distillation from Besson through Barr and Yarwood make fas- cinating historical reading. Chroma- tographic methods include gas chro- matography and thin-layer chroma- tography. The entirety of Chapter IV is de- voted to the Karl Fischer method from its development in 1935 through potentiometric and coulo- metric adaptations. Applications of the Karl Fischer method will be cov- ered in a later volume. All chapters are generously refer- eneed. Chapter III contains 125 ref- erences on azeotropie distillatiov. and chromatography. There are 43 references to the Karl Fischer meth- od. If the reader requires additional background or detail, it should be easily found. This book is printed with a type that resembles a typewriter. It is double-spaced and easy to read. It should be included in the analytical library and should be of consider- able value.--JaMES W. JENIZINS-- Leeming/Pacquin, Division of Pfiz- er Inc.
