ALEURONE AND BIALEURONE, 'THE MOST RECENT DISCOVERIES APPLIED COSMETOLOGY* By DR. N. AV^LLE /lrva/ Laboratories, Sion, Swit.•er/and TO THE ALEUROSE extract obtained by a biological process from wheat yielded the following analysis: Moisture .............. 10.15% Ash ................... 15.75% Amine-Nitrogen ........ 0. 471% Total Nitrogen ......... 3.88% Fats ............. 27.25% Cellulose ......... Traces Carbohydrates .... 22.00% The easy fermentation of the original extract and variations in the ash residue led to the difficult problem of extracting the active components. Numerous experiments showed that the water soluble distillate possessed a high biological activity. For this reason we concentrated our experiments mainly on the distilled portions. Successive distillations finally yielded a highly concentrated substance which we called Bialeurone. The simple water soluble distillate of Aleurone (called Aleuronin by Perini), and the concentrated distillate Bialeurone were further analyzed by Perini, Muntoni and others. Some results were: They both have a spectrum which is characterized by maxima at 215 and 275 A. under ultraviolet light, and the photometric examination served to estimate the concentration of the active component in the distillate. Aleurone decreases the Fehling reaction and gives a clear reaction with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, indicating an aidehyde or ketone character. The percentage in grams in one liter of Bialeurone is the following: Cystine .................. 2.43 Lysipe •. ................. 4.42, Arginjne ................. 5. ¸1 Hystidine ................ 2• 35 Glutamic Acid ............ 57:50 Glutamine ............... 9.69 Glycine ............. 2.85 Leucine ............. 1.86 Tyrosine ............ 8.55 Tryptophane ......... 1.05 Proline .............. 4,28 The vitamin content per gram in gialeuro•e is the following: * R•sum• of paper presented at the August 2, 1957, Meeting, Geneva, Switzerland. 343

Further experiments showed the possibility of a combination of Aleurone with cobalt and manganese. The biological effects of Aleuronin could be of tremendous importance, even in the field of medicine. The principle of biological activity and effect is no longer an abstract concept but a reality. Numerous experiences in the fields of tropic and nutritional effects of Bialeurone on the skin indicate stimulation of the general nutrition of the skin. Naturally this is a very delicate problem with numerous possible complications (irritations, allergic reactions). Further chemical tests showed negative results for sugar and amino acids, positive for ketone acids. Additional tests were made to check the effect of Aleuronin as a growth factor. It was found that Aleuronin especially in a dilution of 1:100 increased growth of Lupinus albus in water effectively. Further, one observed an increase in weight of rats under endoperitoneal treatment with Aleurone. One even observed the favorable effect and influence of Aleuronin on the growth of rats whose development had been arrested through the feeding of a diet con- taining 2.5 per cent thyroid. The effect of Aleuronin on the regeneration of red corpuscles and hepatic reproduction were analyzed and found positive. Conclusions: Even so we should not draw definite conclusions about the biological effect of Aleuronin, since the pure substance has not been isolated. The real structure and compositions of its active principle are still unknown. Nevertheless, it is certain that it contains factors that stimulate growth. A thorough knowledge of all the circumstances and professional thorough- hess have enabled us to market products with the right concentrations and suitable excipients which in hundreds of cases have shown themselves to be the best products for skin tissue. They have shown a real stimulation of the cells with the resulting disappearance of wrinkles and manifestations of old age and a rejuvenation of tissue. The treatment founded on Bi- aleurone, which we evolved is a shock treatment by injection combined with an external application in the form of a cream.
