ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT By GEORGE G. KOLAR TODAY, DECEMBER 13, 1956, we conclude the 11th year of our I SOCIETY'S existence. I am very happy to report, as President of the SOCIETY, that through I the diligent efforts of my fellow officers, Committee Chairmen and Commit- I tees, we have accomplished and performed what I hope will be considered •satisfactory progress in furthering the interests of the members and the ISoCIETY aS a whole. This evening, as you know, we are honoring our ninth recipient of the IMedal Award which is the highest honor that our SOCIETY can offer to any •scientist for outstanding contributions to the science and art of cosmetics. lout recipient this year, for the first time, will be a woman--one who has Iperformed ably in our SOCIETY as Chairman of the Library Committee for •several years. She is, as you know, Miss Florence E. Wall. Miss WaiFs •selection has been made by our past Medal Award winners, the Committee •of which is headed by Dr. Emil Klarmann, and includes Dr. Ernest Guen- Ither, William Poucher, Maison G. deNavarre and Dr. Everett McDonough. This year, we have also bestowed our eighth honorary membership which •was offered to Food & Drug Commissioner George P. Larrick. Also this year, we presented our second Special Award of $1000 for those Iliterary contributions which were felt to be of greatest value to our industry. IThe recipient of this Award was Dr. Walter P. Shelley of the Dept. of IDermatology at the University of Pennsylvania. It was through the able lefforts of your new President-Elect who was Chairman of this Committee, [[ames H. Baker, and Dr. Paul G. I. Lauffer, Chairman of the Literary IReview Committee, that this Program was brought to fulfillment. Our •new Chairman, who has taken over active direction of this Committee, is IH. J. Amsterdam. Dr. Lester Apperson will head the Literature Review ISub-Committee. Our third Seminar was likewise guided to a successful conclusion by our ISeminar Chairman and Director of the Board, Gabriel Barnett who acted iin this capacity for the third year. This year, we had 275 people registered Ifor these meetings. Next year the Board of Directors has decided that the ISeminar will be held in Chicago in recognition of that Chapter's 10th ,Anniversary year. 57
58 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS As is the custom, your President has addressed both the Chicago and I New York Chapters on the annual President's night. It was a privilege ' to learn of the excellent progress that has been made by both of these I groups in increasing membership and pursuing the high quality of coopera-ß tion that exists in these Chapters. Chairman of the Chicago Chapter was i Dr. Sylvia Kramer and the New York Chapter was headed by William • Lambert. The SOmET¾ is greatly indebted to Secretary Robert A. Kramer and Treasurer Dr. Walter A. Taylor, for their unfiagging interest in our behaloe It is impossible to detail the work that these gentlemen have done for the good of our group. I was highly pleased to learn that they will continue in • these capacities for an additional year. Secretary Robert A. Kramer this past May represented our SOmF. T¾ at the 10th International Cosmetic Congress in Brussels, Belgium, and presented a paper entitled, "A Broad Outline of the Aims and Accomplish- ments of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in the United States." He further visited France, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany and found a • strong desire among our European cosmetic chemists to exchange knowl- ß edge of their technical developments. Mr. Kramer reported to our Board [ of Directors of this feeling. This past month our founder Maison G.. deNavarre, acting as our representative, met with the English, French,, Italian and Danish groups. He has proposed a reciprocal arrangement to • further the exchange of these scientific papers. I am quite confident that I in the ensuing years we will have a much greater international exchange of[ such information. We wish to thank these gentlemen for their work in• our behalf in setting these wheels in motion. This year our Publications Committee headed by Maison G. deNavarre,: with the excellent cooperation of his Committee consisting of Miss Ruth R.. Bien, Mrs. Veronica L. Conley, Miss MarJam C. Aarons and Dr. Emil G.. Klarmann, has prepared for the first time six issues of the JOURNAL, four l being published here in the United States, and two being supplied by the '. British groups. A definite pattern has now been established and one which • will allow for membership to receive all papers read at our meetings and[ seminars shortly after they are presented. Also, through the Committee's efforts, we have this JOURNAL on a self-sustaining basis. Special commendation should go to the Program Chairman Ross C. Whitman, the Arrangements Chairman Walter Wynne, the Library Chair- man Warren Dennis, Jr., and the Publicity Chairman Savery F. Coneybear and his able assistant Miss Audrey Langdon for their excellent cooperation during the year. It has been a pleasure to work with them. Membership has reached a new high of 536 members Chairman Michael Stanton reports 80 new members were admitted this year which indicates very good representation throughout our industry.
