NEW YORK GHAPTER NEWS THE VIaST MEETING of the fall season took place on September 9th with Mr. Francis Chilson speaking on "Production Progress in the Cos- metic Industry" which incorporated "off the cuff" experiences of great interest to the cosmetic industry. Mr. Chitson, an industrial consultant, is well known in the cosmetic indus- try and is most easily identified with "Management Forum" which he has authored over the years for Drug and Cosmetic Industry where he is pro- duction consultant. On October 7th Prof. Joseph Kanig of Columbia University, College of Pharmacy spoke on "Measurements of Particulate Solids in Aerosols." The various techniques which have been developed for fine particle meas- urement in aerosols were discussed. Prof. Kanig is well qualified to review this important research and quality control area. Besides his title of Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Columbia University College of Pharmacy, where he has taught Indus- trial Pharmaceutical Management and Compounding Techniques for the last twelve years, he has been named director of the new aerosol research laboratory which was recently established at Columbia. Prof. Kanig re- ceived his undergraduate training at Long Island University, Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and his graduate degrees have been earned at Colum- bia University and New York University. As has been its custom since its founding, the New York Chapter invited the incumbent president of the National Society, Savery F. Coneybear, to be the guest speaker at the closing meeting of the year, November 4th. Mr. Coneybear, Director of New Products Development for the Colgate- Palmolive Company, spoke informally on the general delineation of the affairs of the Society. In making the membership aware of the fiscal situa- tion, reasons and effects of changes in the SOOIET¾ By-Laws, the interna- tional relationships and other such problems as face our SOOIET¾, he hoped for better integration of the membership into the SOOIET¾'S affairs. The scientific sessions were given together with the meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Fettwissenschaft--section cosmetics-- which was held at the same time at Baden-Baden. INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF SOCIETIES OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS Maison G. deNavarre Is First President Of International Feder- ation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists On September 8th in Brussels, Belgium, the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists became a reality with the election of Mai- son G. deNavarre of the Soe•E•r¾ oF COSMETic C•gM•sTs of the United States as its first President, and the appointment of a working committee consisting of Dr. R. H. Marriott of England, Dr. L. W. Masch of Germany and Pierre Velon, of France. Eight countries were represented at a meeting held on September 7th and 8th, and the new Federation will include the So- cieties of Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, England, France, Spain and the United States, whose representatives attended the meeting and also Den- mark and Italy, who were not represented. Societies of other countries have already indicated an interest in the new Federation. Sabbat J. Strianse, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee, who also represented the American SoeigT¾, reported that work was begun on a new constitution and that many of the points upon which there was dis- agreement are now being worked out 4-23
