The author's background in sulfur chemistry goes back to World War I. This qualifies him to write so voluminous a series (five volumes) on this subject, a life's work. Volume I consists of five chapters dealing with mercaptans and mer- capto-acids together with their reac- tions and negative derivatives. Chapter 5 begins with a discussion of thioglycolic acid. Its various re- actions are described. Its usefulness in depilation and hair waving is not mentioned.
