THE SPECIAL AWARD MAY 13, 1955 Hotel Biltmore, New York, N.Y. THE SPECIAL AWARD of $1000 was decided upon by the SOCIETY at a meeting in the Spring of 1954. Realizing the great need for basic research as the foundation for developing better cosmetic products, the Award is a step in the SOCIETY'S program to encourage publication of outstanding scientific literature in the field of cosmetic technology. James H. Baker was appointed chairman of the Special Award Committee with H. J. Amsterdam, Christian Wight and Raymond Stetzer serving as committee members. A Literature Review Committee of outstanding specialists in various branches of science examined the submitted material. The Committee was under the chairmanship of Paul G.I. Lauffer with the following mem- bers: Milton Harris, G. Robert Clarke, A. I. Gebhart, Franz Herrmann, Lloyd Hazleton and Emery I. Valko. Dr. Stephen Rothman, Professor of Dermatology at the University of Chicago, was chosen as the first recipient of the $1000 Award which was presented at a special luncheon ceremony during the annual Spring meeting, May 13, in New York City. Dr. Rothman's book, "Physiology and Biochemistry of the Skin," was considered by the Literature Review Committee to be a significant contribution to research on cosmetic technology. The book covers thirty-three years of research of dermato- logical problems and presents a summary of up-to-date knowledge of skin physiology. THE FIRST SPECIAL AWARD George G. Kolar, Master of Ceremonies introduced James H. Baker who reviewed the conditions leading to the Award. Mr. Kolar then introduced Dr. Marion B. Sulzberger, Professor and Chairman, Department of Dermatology and Syphilology, New York University-Bellevue Medical Center, who gave the following biographical sketch of Dr. Stephen Roth- man.
