FORMULA'FION-CLINICAL DATA RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS 537 The cosmetic formulation cards received fron! the laboratories arc edited for inconsistencies in ingredient names and any obvious adminis- trative errors. One cosmetic chemist may prefer to use the name "Carbo- wax 400," another may choose "PEG (Polyethyleneglycol) 400." They are synonymous. However, we have cross-referenced all in•edient names to cover the situation. Another variation in reporting is "citric acid" or "acid, citric." For consistency in ingredient input, we select the Vqarner-Lambert official name as described in the Quality Control De- parm•ent Manufacturers Specification list. To implement the system and drill the information into Termatrex cards, we begin with punched cards. Two card types are prepared in the keypunching operation--a title card and an ingredient card. The title card contains the formulation number, name, classification number, and project number (Fig. •). In order to maintain a readily available source of formulation names, a computer listing is prepared in formulation number order (Table III). The ingredient card contains the formulation number, ingredient name, Terxnatrex number, and Manufacturing Specification (MS) num- ber or mannfacturer. (I• the MS number is not available, the name of the manufacturer is entered as identification.) A peculiar problem often exists in data cards. For example, you may have a lotion, formulation number 205-40, with ingredients indicated as Table III Title Card Listing Form. No. Name Class. 538 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS being the same as formulation number 205-37. However, the perfume in the latter has been replaced with Fra•ance #2-4931. We are unable to process this formulation until we pull formulation card 205-37 which contains the a,ctual ingredients used. A similar situation arises when a frequently used base is incorporated into a new formulation. Rather than rewrite the original ingredients, the cosmetic chemist indicates "same as base in formulation 123." Again, we must go to our card files to obtain the actual ingredients used in preparation of the base. In the near future we plan to assign term num'bers to all ingTedients. Such a move will enable us to keypnnch a five-digit term number, from
