•2 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS 6. How is the free ammonia content of a cold permanent xxaving lotion determined ? On analysis a cold wave lotion gave the following results. 2.0 mls. of lotion were equivalent to 16.6 mls. N/10 iodine solution, and on distillation in the presence of caustic soda, 2.0 mls. of lotion yielded ammonia equivalent to 25.0 mls. N/10 hydrochloric acid. From the data, calculate the concentration of free ammonia in the lotion and from your result comment on the quality of the lotion. 7. Give an account of one cycle of activity of a human hair follicle. 8. Discuss the relative merits of the alternative types of packs wlfich might be considered for any TWO of the following. (a) An alcohol-based hair lotion. (b) A talcum powder. (c) A W/O hair cream. COMMENTS OF THE EXAMINERS PAPER I The answers to the compulsory question were generally fairly good. Ques- tion 2 was quite popular and well answered. Questions 3, 4, and 5 were not very popular and the answers were generally disappointing. Question 6 was well answered. Question 7 produced in the main disappointing ans vers, as most candidates did not make the best use of the wide scope available. The results from Question 8 were poor. PAPER II Only one candidate attempted Question 1, and it was well answered in part. Questions 2, 3, and 4 were all quite popular and well answered. The answers to Question 5 were very vague and indicated that the standard of pure chemistry of the candidates was not very high. Questions 6 and 8 were generally quite well answered, but Question 7 was not very popular and the answers were quite sketchy.
