68 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS busy. They have scanned the field quite thoroughly and were not able to find any one who met the requirements for this Award. We thank him and his committee for guarding this distinguished Award by keeping it on such a high plane. During the past year we have not had the services of a semiprooeessional publicity agent such as we have had during the past few years. I thank Harry Hilfer, Chairman of our Publicity Committee, together with his assistant, Miss Clare Brown, for the efforts they have extended in publi- cizing our various functions. To a large extent, a president is termed a success or a failure by the officers who surround him. I have been most fortunate in that all of my officers, during this past year, have had the interest of the Society at heart and have done everything within their power to maintain our high professional standards. They have rendered great assistance to me and have been no small cause why the Society has been so outstanding this past year. The secretarial duties of our Society are vastly important, as they are like tentacles that reach out into all facets of the Society. To an incoming president, the fact that he has an experienced secretary to rely upon is most heartening and reassuring--Robert A. Kramer, I thank you for your many efforts on behalf of the Society, and I personally thank you for the guidance you have given me. To my directors, Savery F. Coneybear, Sophie L. Plechner, Paul G. I. Lauffer and the chairmen of our three chapters--Seymour Kornblau, Harry Isacoff and Paul W. Jewel, I am greatly indebted to all of you for your opinions and suggestions when matters of crucial importance arose. The directors have a stabilizing effect on the president, and you have fulfilled this task well. The Executive Committee, with Sabbat J. Strianse as Chairman, has resolved a numbe• of problems that require the wisdom and foresight of our past presidents. This committee is one of the most important in our Society because any problem that is of such great import and requires considerable study is referred to it. They have met frequently and are in the process of resolving a number of important questions. The entire Society is to be congratulated on having such men comprise this committee. Our new Administrative Assistant, William H. Higgins, although having been with us only a short time, has undertaken his duties with great vigor and has been a great help to all of us in arranging the Seminar and other meetings. In this connection, I would like to thank the New York Acad- emy of Sciences, particularly Mrs. Eunice Miner, who, whenever asked, has given us many suggestions based on her valuable experience.
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT 69 Walter A. Taylor, since the inception of this Society you have held many off:ices in it. I think they should be enumerated: Charter Mere ber Director President, 1948 Member of the Executive Committee for five years Treasurer for the past three and one-half years You have served your Society well and because of your present business commitments, you have personally requested that you do not run again for the Treasurer's office. Reluctant as we were to do so, we complied with your wishes and trust that we will have the value of your experience in the years to come. The Society thanks you, and I personally add my sincere thanks with good wishes in your new venture. Our Nominating Committee has recently completed its work for 1958. The seriousness of presenting proper candidates before the Society was outlined in a letter sent to the members by the Chairman, Edward P. Morrish. This resulted in a "ticket" worthy of our Society. Because the Chairman was on this "ticket," I asked our President-Elect, Savery F. Coneybear, to supervise counting the ballots. The fact that 60 per cent of our membership voted is indicative of the great interest the members have in the running of their Society. You have spoken and the results of the election are as follows: Savery F. Coneybear is the new President for 1959, with Herman J. Amsterdam, President-Elect Robert A. Kramer, Secretary Lester I. Conrad, Treasq urer Sophie L. Plechner, Director and Stillman R. Goff, Director.
