These comments made by the subject others by subject or observer. Many salon managers and beauticians also noted differences be- tween coded lotion samples. After this study, identified samples were distributed for trial use at eight salons. Representative comments ob- tained were: "The hair is springy after drying." "It is easy to style." "The hair is manageable." "Wet• hair combs well--can apply to tangled hair." "Seems to condition hair--does it contain a conditioner?" After the two-side styling study was completed, participants asked for additional samples to be used at home and by beauticians. These interests and the natural interest in a new pro.duct led to inquiries from 60 girls four samples. Although distribution of samples was not planned initially in the study, the extensive use of the new product made it possible to obtain helpful information on performance. While 90% of the answers showed that the user preferred the lotion over that used previously, this finding alone is not as significant as that ot5 the two- side styling results. The group of 60 was not selected randomly each participant receiving a questionnaire was using the lotion as a result o15 a pre15erence that had led to requesting samples originally. Representa- tive comments are, however, useful. Those most commonly made were: "Gives improved body and improved hold." "Easy to comb and easy to recomb o•: touch-up." Improved luster, noted in the controlled observations ot5 the two-side styling study, was mentioned in only a few of the questionnaire replies. The questionnaire replies were based on observations made when both sides were styled with the same lotion. Side-by-side comparisons could
POLYAMIDE RESINS FOR HAIR 331 not be made. Under these conditions, only large and important dif- ferences could be noted. Curiosity prompted a number of men to try the polyamide lotion. Those making style changes used the lotion consistently as the most satisfactory solution to the problem of retraining hair to a new style. SUMMARY Comparing results from the personal use and from laboratory eval- uations of these hair care resins validates the laboratory methods used. However, realism of the personal evaluation studies makes them more reliable. Both are needed. The more expensive, personal use studies are less adapted for initial phases of a study involving, as this one, the evaluation of a large number of compositions. The work has also demonstrated the compatibility of the aminopoly- amide polymer structure with hair and its versatility making it adapt- able to specific requirements of hair care uses. By using reactive and nonreactive derivatives of the amine, a permanent, shampoo-resistant hair conditioner and a readily removed lotion have been developed to give easily managed hair with improved quality and style retention.
