This requirement necessitated the training of more dental scientists, the development of better research methods, and a more critical appraisal of dental research. The inevit- able result has been and will continue to be more and better dental re- search by scientists with specialized skills in dental problems. In recent actions by the Food and Drug Administration stemming from the new Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act you will recognize a similar situation. Again, more and better research will be the inevitable result, and more scientists will be required. It will take the labors of these many scientists before there emerges a more complete and deeper understanding of the natural phenomena in- volved in life's processes. It is a challenge, indeed, to be engaged in this interest- ing and important work.
