150 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS rich in oleates, especially oils with small amounts of free oleic acid. After oleic acid came olive oil, then soaps of oleic acid. It may be that part of the so-called "drying" action of soaps is due to the oleate soaps. Mineral oil, stearic acid, and castor oil being the most effective. Lano- lin produced little or no effect. The work was summarized by a view that in the test rat castor oil and lanolin may be the best for keeping "the skin bearing hair in best condition." Here then is much to think about. Yet, the evidence, when added to other data on the ef- fect of fats and oils on animals, indi- cates the need for more basic re- search. Is this not a"natural" proj- ect for the cosmetic industry? HOW WOMAN BEGAN* According to ancient Sanskrit legend, the great god Twashtri found that he had exhausted the solid material in making man. So to create woman he took: "the rotundity of the moon, the curves of the creepers, the clinging of tendrils, the slenderness of reeds, the bloom of flowers, the lightness of leaves, the timidity of hares, the vanity of the peacock, the gaity of sunbeams, the weeping of clouds, the fickleness of winds, the sweetness of honey, the cruelty of the tiger, the glow of fire, the coldness of snow, *Adapted from a clipping taken from Drug Trade News, the chattering of jays, the cooing of doves, the hypocrisy of the crane, and the fidelity of the came. l, and compounded these elements into woman." EXCHANGING IDEAS In one of the trade publications appeared the following quotario.n: "If two men each have a dollar and they exchange them, each man still has one dollar, and there is no prog- ress. But, if two men each have an idea and they exchange them, each man then has two ideas and often they multiply rapidly."* So you see, the more you share, the more you know. Our SOCIETY' OF COSMETIC CHEM- ISTS is a forum for an exchange and discussion of scientific facts within the sphere of our science, regardless of their political or material con- sequence, with the purpose of searching for and examination of the matter in hand. We suffer no con- finement, prohibition, or suppres- sion. As a result, this brings to our programs controversial people and subjects, enabling us to be more en- lightened members of our profession. But these meetings of technical men require that all give or share their knowledge and not just a generous few. Let us not dodge our responsibility, otherwise, there will be nothing but parasites and deca- dence. Some have heard it said before, that all of us know what we do, because there came before us some * From "For Instance," published by American Cyanamid Co.
CHICAGO SECTION NEWS 151 unselfish people who shared their knowledge with us, and thus we learned. Then we went out and learned a few things and now it is our turn to share with those that come after us. If we all recognize our obligations to posterity on this basis, there is no fear for the future of the cosmetic industry. President McDonough returned to the rostrum with the following final remarks: "Thank you Mr. Medallist for a most interesting address. Before performing my last duty as your president, I wish to thank the Dinner Committee and particularly the Chairman, Mr. Marcel Surer, for such an excellent dinner and arrangements. I also wish to thank the musicians for such lovely music, and again I wish to thank all of my officers, members of the Board, all committee chairmen, and members of the committees for their very great co-operation and for the mem- bership at large for the honor and pleasure of serving as their presi- dent. I shall now turn the SOCIETY over to the safekeeping of your in- coming president, Dr. Sol Gershon, who has so ably assisted me during this past year. He will introduce, if he so desires, his officers, Board members, and thereafter adjourn this meeting." Dr. Gershon introduced the new officers and adjourned the meeting. CHICAGO SECTION NEWS THE APP4L meeting held on the 29th of the month, was "Ladies Night." Not only did the ladies get a gift commem- orating the occasion, but they heard Miss Celeste Carlyle, nationally known consultant on style, beauty, and charm who discussed "Props for Your Poise." At the meeting of June 10, Mr. Lieb reported on the business con- ducted at the New York meeting in May. In addition, Dr. Sol Ger- shon, president of the Soc•.T¾, and Research Manager, Pepsodent Divi- sion, Lever Brothers Company, addressed the meeting on the sub- ject "Is Your Product Effective?" ß The following is an abstract of his address. The performance of carefully controlled, scientific tests has re- vealed information on the effec- tiveness of dentifrices in control- ling caries, objectionable mouth odors, cleansing teeth, and com- bating common gum troubles. As a result, each day, even the most critical dental scientists are be- coming convinced that dentifrices serve a far more useful function than previously believed. Because of the promising re- suits in the dentifrice field, re- search work has been markedly stimulated so that even better, more effective products have been, and are being, developed. This desirable sequence of events results in an advantage to the consumer, manufacturer, and
