j. Soc. Cosmet. Chem., 39, 223-224 (May/June 1988) Book Review ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CONDI- TIONING RINSE INGREDIENTS, by Anthony L. L. Hunting. Micelie Press, Cranford, New Jersey, 1987. 492 pages. Price: $89.00. The Encyclopedia of Conditioning Rinse In- gredients compiled by A. L. L. Hunting is a companion volume to the Encyclopedia of Shampoo Ingredients by the same author. This volume comprises a survey of the in- gredients of 259 conditioners pulled ran- domly from stores in the New York Met- ropolitan area in November 1983. Al- though there is a four-year gap between compilation of data and publication, this book still provides the reader with fast and easy access to essential information re- garding a large number of ingredients (451) used in conditioners. Whilst the bulk of the information will be most useful to the formulator or product devel- opment chemist, the inclusion of such in- formation as marketing group codes, de- rived from product labels, increases the utility of this book to other departments of cosmetics and toiletries companies in- volved in the production and marketing of hair care preparations. The book is divided into three main parts: Background, Products, and Ingre- dients. Background covers ingredient-la- beling schemes and, nomenclature and provides a general procedure for preparing and manufacturing conditioning rinse preparations. In part 2, Products, a list of the conditioners appears. This contains a good mix of brands retailed in grocery, drug, department, and beauty supply stores, beauty salons, and also includes some available through direct marketing. Conditioners in all price ranges, value- priced to expensive, are included as well as some aimed at specialized markets (ethnic etc.). Given the fast-moving nature of the cosmetic industry and hair care products, some gaps do exist in this four-year-old survey. For example, Procter and Gamble is represented only by the brands acquired in the takeover of Richardson-Vicks, and so notably absent is data on Ivory and Prell, both introduced since November 1983. Formula changes have also been made in several of the surveyed brands, thus dating some material. Nevertheless, the list gives a good overview of the con- ditioner market. Another section of Products details an analysis of ingredients used with respect to the frequency of ap- pearance in products. Later editions of this book would no doubt show large changes in this list, a reflection of the constant in- troduction of new materials for use in the cosmetic industry. The major and most useful section of this book is Part 3: In- gredients. This is an invaluable segment for both the novice and the more experi- enced formulator. The compiled informa- tion covers CTFA name, CAS number, chemical formula, reason for use, safety facts, physical data and composition, and general use levels for the 451 ingredients. Some general information on the mate- rials, examples of surveyed conditioners which contain the material in question, and a list of suppliers rounds out each entry. All of this adds up to easily acces- sible and extremely useful information for conditioner formulation. 223
224 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS Additional appendices provide names and addresses of suppliers, as well as lists of other potential materials which could be used in hair-conditioning rinses. Ap- pendix D, which summarizes ingredient properties and applications in a tabular form, should be of particular use for quick reference. Lastly, there is a good and com- prehensive bibliography and reference listing. This is acknowledged by the au- thor to be general and not necessarily spe- cific only to conditioning ingredients. The Encyclopedia of Conditioning Rinse In- gredients should be a useful and valuable addition to the bookshelves of the novice and experienced formulator of hair care products and of the cosmetic chemist in general.--JANE CLARKE--Colgate Palmolive Company.
