NEW MEMBERS 217 months. The total of treatments given to date in all hospitals probably amounts to 5000 to 6000 and have had a most beneficial effect on different types of patients, including schizophrenics, depressives, etc. The Annual Dinner and Dance was held at the Cafe Royal on February 6th with an attendance of over two hundred members and guests. The toast was proposed by Dr. R. H. Marriott, president of the Society. Dr. Marriott, as a prelude to the toast, gave an account of the activities and difficulties of the Society during the past twelve months. Dr. Marroitt concluded by proposing the toast of the guests. The principal guest was Mr. Frank Schon to whose industry and leadership Dr. Marriott paid tribute. Prominent among the guests were members of the American Society, Mr. van Ameringen, Mr. Gert Keller, president of the Essential Oil Importers' Association of American (and Mrs. Keller). Mr. Frank Schon, chairman of Marchon Products, Limited, thanked Dr. Marriott and commented upon the worthiness of the Society he wished the Congress held in April well. The future of international cooperation and the future of industry were indissolubly linked. In this life there were searchers after truth and searchers after wealth. He had in mind scientific fact compared with advertising claims. NEW MEMBERS Bogaty, Herman, 1027 Ridge Ave., Evanston, Ill. BOOK REVIEWS PRESSURIZED PACKAGING (AERO- SOLS), by A. Herzka and J. Pick- thall. Butterworths Scientific Pub- lications, London, Academic Press, Inc., New York 3, N.Y. 1958. 411 pages, size $1/2 X 9 inches, illustrated and indexed. Price $12.00. It is fortunate that two British authors, A. Herzka, of the Research Department of the Metal Box Com- pany, and J. Pickthall, Chief Chem- ist of Polak & Schwartz, took time to set down in print the aerosol story in their book, "Pressurized Packaging." Although much of the research and development on con- tainers, valves, propellents, and aerosol products has taken place in this country and much has been published in trade journals, scienti- fic journals, and commercial publi- cations, nothing has appeared in book form. We, therefore, owe these two authors a debt of grati- tude for compiling and editing this work for our use. For the uninitiated in this field, this book offers a quick education in such aerosol subjects as propellents, containers, valves, and manufactur- ing techniques. For those that are engaged in the aerosol industry, it offers a compilation of much of the technical data that has appeared in magazine and trade literature in the United States. The chapters on formulation cover a complete range of aerosol products from cosmetics to pharmaceuticals. A chapter on general formulation covers a multi- tude of diverse products, such as snow, rug shampoo, shoe polish, lens cleaner, etc. Of special current in- terest is the Appendix V, which contains a world list of valve, pro- pellent, container and equipment suppliers, as well as contract fillers of aerosol products. Perhaps the only criticism of the work is the tendency to paraphrase large portions of published material without indicating that they are direct quotations from the refer- ences quoted. This book will be a useful addition to the libraries of all people concerned in any way with aerosol products.--MoRR•S J. RooT, G. Barr and Co. THE CHEIVIiCAL FORMULARY, Vol- ume X, H. Bennett, Editor-in-Chief. Chemical Publishing Co., Inc., New York 10, N.Y. 1957. 392 pages, size 51/2X 8•/4 inche•, indexed. Price •8.00. ß The present volume follows the pattern of previous ones. It is a collection of formulas and other data, patented and otherwise, from many fields in industry, starting with adhesives and going through waxes. Cosmetics get about a 40- page treatment. An index to suppliers of materials mentioned in the book are found in the appendix.--M. G. DENAVARRE. 218
