President Kolar's Attention is being concentrated at this time upon our forthcoming Third Annual Seminar to be held in New York City on Octo- ber 4th and 5th. We are indebted to Gabriel Barnett who has accepted Chairmanship of this Committee once again. Through Mr. Barnett's diligent efforts, we will have for this Seminar a most interesting Sym- posium on three subjects. The three subjects will be moderated and addressed by some of our fellow members and other leading experts in these fields. Due to the extraordinary interest which has been evidenced by the great number of early reservations, the Board of Directors at the last meeting has decided to increase the limit on attendance to 250•members of course to be given preference on admittance. However, we do suggest that all applications with checks be sent as soon as possible to guarantee a reservation. A letter will be forthcoming from Mr. Barnett which will give full details on this Seminar. We are indeed happy to report that our last meeting at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City on May 18th was a successful one. A great deal of credit must be given to Walter Wynne, Chairman of the Arrangements Committee, and to Ross C. Whitman, our Program Chairman, for handling this record breaking attendance of 434 people on a very efficient basis and for a program that merited the interest of all attending. At this meeting, as you no doubt are aware, the Society's Eighth Honorary Membership was extended to Food and Drug Commissioner, George P. Larrick. We were indeed pleased to have Dr. Larrick present for the acceptance and he was ably introduced by one of our other honor- ary members, Stephen Mayham, Executive Vice-President of the Toilet Goods Association. At this meeting, our other honored guest was Walter P. Shelley of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, who was awarded our Second Special Award of $1000 for the outstanding literary contribution of the past year. This $1000 award was made possible by the contributions of leading members of our industry. Their names will be listed in another part of the Journal. 487
488 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS All of this work of soliciting funds and determining the Award winner was the result of a great deal of intensified effort put forth by a man who headed this Committee for its first two years, namely, James H. Baker. The Committee Chairman, Paul G.I. Lauffer, who likewise headed the Committee for determining the literary work to be adjudged, was ably assisted by the following scientists: Gabriel Barnett, Irvin H. Blank, Joseph Dusenbury, Joseph Kalish, David Pressman and Irwin B. Wilson. This second award signified a job well done by James Baker and Paul Lauffer who were aided by the following Committee members: H. J. Amsterdam, Chris White, Donald H. Powers, Kenneth L. Russell and Roy Stetzer. The new Special Award Committee will have as their chairman H. J. Amsterdam who will be assisted by L. D. Apperson, Chairman of the Literary Award Subcommittee, and the following Committee members: C. F. Wight, Paul G.I. Lauffer, R. Stetzer, S. Gershon and M. Kazmeier. Our Luncheon, at which time the Awards were made, was very attended and the program was conducted by our President-Elect Sabbat J. Strianse. Prior to our Luncheon Meeting, we had our Twelfth Semiannual Meet- ing at which time a treasurer's report was read by Walter A. Taylor. This once again was a masterpiece on solvency. He reported that further thought is being given at this time to the investment of our funds in ad- ditional Bonds. At this meeting, a change in By-Laws was voted unanimously. The By-Laws have been amended as follows: "Any member who has reached the age of sixty and has retired from ac- tive, remunerative work, and who has been a member for a period which until January 1, 1960, shall be five years but which thereafter shall be ten years, may apply, or an active member may apply for him to the Secretary." At our last Board of Directors Meeting which was held on May 17, 1956, our Secretary, Robert A. Kramer, was directed to represent our Society at the Tenth International Cosmetic Congress in Brussels, Bel- gium, May 21-24 and he presented a paper entitled, "A Broad Outline of the Aims and Accomplishments of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in the United States." Also, our fellow member, Lloyd Hazeleton was appointed our So- ciety's official representative to the National Anniversary Ceremony of the Association of Food and Drug Officials of the United States, held in Washington on June 27th. It may be of further interest to know that at the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists' "Perkin Centennial" to be held the week of September 10, 1956, our Society will be represented by our former
