PRESIDENT'S NEWSLETTER 489 President, Donald H. Powers, who will present a paper "The Application of Colorants to Cosmetics." Maison G. deNavarre, who among other duties is Chairman of our Publications Committee, submitted a report on the activities of his Com- mittee. As you no doubt all realize, this year we are receiving for the first time six Journals annually. Four of these Journals are being pub- lished in the United States with two being contributed by our fellow cos- metic chemists in England. It has been gratifying to our Society to see the increasing number of advertisers in our Journals. It is through their efforts that we make this a self-sufficient department. Our Membership Committee has kept forth the growth of our organiza- tion by obtaining 41 qualified members this year. Michael A. Stanton, our Committee Chairman, has solicited membership from the various pharmaceutical schools and has met with a great deal of interest from these sources. Emil Klarmann who is Chairman of our Medal Award Committee this year has already solicited requests for nominations from the membership for the 1956 Medal Award. We sincerely hope that we may be favored with your studied recommendations. This is the highest award that can come to a scientist in our field of endeavor. James H. Baker at our Directors Meeting reported on behalf of the Special Award Committee the following facts that I think should be noted at this time as they are of significant interest to everyone in our group. "The Special Award Committee is very happy to announce that we have received $4080 from May, 1955 to May, 1956 toward the Special Award. Since there was a balance of $1975 from last year's Special Award, this leaves a total of $6055 in the Special Award fund. With the deduction of $1000 tomorrow, this will leave a balance of $5055 to the Special Award fund. I believe it should be noted that, since the Special Award Committee has been created, they have raised a total of $7055. Last year we had 41 contributors this year, 77, and I believe there were only three parties that contributed last year but did not do so this year and, by the same token, many who were not interested in con- tributing last year readily contributed toward this year's Award. We be- lieve that this speaks well for the caliber of the recipients that have re- ceived this Award." The Library Committee which is this year headed by Warren B. Dennis, Jr., and has as its members W. B. Dennis, Chairman Paul G. I. Lauffer, Frank J. Steele, Florence E. Wall and Harry Isacoff, submitted a very de- tailed report on the activities of this group. It would be well for any member of our Society to visit our Library to see the work that has been expended in the direction of compiling a well-rounded group of publica- tions. Their report stated among the following:
490 JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS "Miss Ruth Stein has been retained as Librarian Consultant for the purpose of organizing the mechanics of our library. "A Borrowers' Register is now complete. "Library of Congress Cards have been obtained for all our books which are so classified and File Cards have been set up on all the rest of our books. "The Card File will next be cross indexed and classified according to a subject classification to make it more readily useful to those seeking in- formation. "The acquisitions to the Library for the year 1955 are submitted by Miss Florence E. Wall and are appended herewith for inclusion in the Journal. "By donation, donor unknown-- "Manegold, Erich, 'Emulsionen,' Heidelberg, 1952, Luttgen, C., Glyzerin & Glyzerinahnliche, Stoffe, 1955, Heidelberg. We trust that the activities of our Society have been well noted by all its members in the many trade journals. This increasing publicity can be ascribed to the efforts of our Publicity Committee Chairman, Savery F. Coneybear, and his very capable assistant, Miss Audrey Langdon. Our new Committee on Laboratory Methods for Products Testing has, under the Chairmanship of Donald H. Powers, set up the following sub- committees: A. Evaluation of Waving Lotion Ross C. Whitman, Chairman Murray Berdick Milton Eckstrom James Ervin Donald Kirby Martin Rieger Marshall Sorkin B. Creams and Lotions--Viscosity Studies Paul G. I. Lauffer, Chairman
