CHICAGO--NEW YORK SECTION NEWS CHICAGO SECTION NEWS 501 THE SPECIAL Ladies' Night meeting was held on June 12th at Henrici's Restaurant at the Merchandise Mart. Dr. George R. Hughes, Associate Director of Egyptology at the University of Chicago, spoke on "The Cosmetic Arts in Ancient Egypt." This fascinating lecture covered the origin of the cosmeticJan's art and the use of the products developed. Surviving objects and cosmetic materials from ancient Egypt were de- scribed along with pictorial representations. Dr. Hughes has been studying the culture of ancient Egypt for over twenty-five years, first as a research assistant at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, later as a research associate of the University of Chicago Epigraphic Survey in Luxor, Egypt, and currently as Field Director of this Epigraphic Survey. Dr. Hughes spends several months of each year in Egypt directing the work of the University of Chicago group there. NEW YORK SECTION NEWS THE NEw YORK Chapter now has 191 members and is growing. The membership committee under the chairmanship of Stephen Capkovitz is bringing to the attention of qualified women chemists in the metropolitan area the advantages to them of membership in the Section. Other qualified prospects are also being solicited to join. Ladies' Night on April 25th proved to be a marked success. A cocktail hour preceded the lecture by Dr. Ernest Guenther on "Essential Oil Production the World Over" and a travelogue through South America, both of which were illustrated by colored movies taken by Dr. Guenther. Each lady present received a gift package door prizes were contributed by members of the industry. Meetings of the Section were discontinued during the summer months. A great deal of interest has been shown in the effort of the Education Committee to establish courses at the college level for training cosmetic chemists. Dr. Martin Katz is chairman of this committee of the New York Section and is assisted by Harry Isacoff, Herbert Edelstein and two college professors Leonard Charkin and Joseph L. Kanig. The first fall meeting was held on September 26th. Dr. Amos E. Light, well known for his excellent pharmacological research spoke on "Peripheral Circulation." Dr. Light is associated with the Wellcome Research Laboratories, Tuckahoe, N.Y.
BRITISH SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS The Annual General Meeting was held on May 2$th at the Bonning- ton Hotel. Mr. R. T. Dobson, president, explained the new Constitution and Rules which were before the meeting for approval. The officers and council members for 1956-1957 are as follows: President: R. T. Dobson Vice-President: J. Pickthall Hon. Secretary: F. Riley and Hon. Treas- urer: H. J. Lovell. Council members: H. W. Hibbot, H. Holmes, K. G. Johnson, A. W. Middleton, W. Mitchell, and W. W. Myddleton. Mr. W. R. Littlejohn will become a member of the council on taking over the duties of editor of the British edition of the Journal. The educational course for the Society's Diploma being run at Acton Technical College has shown steady progress under the guidance of Dr. K. G. Johnson. Thirty-one students have been enrolled in the First, Second and Third Year courses for the 1955-1956 sessions. The Third Year course commenced for the first time in September, 1955, and it is expected that this will continue as a regular feature in the t•ture. This Third Year course has only been made possible by the help given by those lecturers, the majority of whom are Society members, in allocating their time during evenings to lectures and laboratory work on their own par- ticular subject. Dr. G. H. Bourne spoke on "Histology of the Skin" on October 5th at the first fall meeting. On November 2nd Mr. T. W. Watson will present his paper on "Silicones in the Cosmetic Industry."
