PENETRATION INTO HAIR FIBER 271 Figure 5. Hair fiber pretreated with aqueous silver nitrate, then made alkaline with sodium hydroxide. Extensive large and fine deposits of silver are evident in the cell membrane complex of the cuticle (•--•). Scale bar = 0.5 lam. served throughout the cortex and on pigment granules. The microfibril/matrix composite was not evident. In some sections the inter-macrofibrillar material contained obvious silver deposits outlining the macrofibrils. Silver deposits were seen at the cuticle cortex boundary, but no cascades were observed.
272 JOURNAL OF COSMETIC SCIENCE Figure 6. Hair fiber pretreated with NaCI (2 min), dried, and then immersed in silver nitrate (2 rain) followed by exposure to light. Deposits of silver are present within the cuticle cmc and progress into the a-layer and exocuticle (•-•,•). Distinct silver deposits surround each macrofibril within the cortex ((D). Scale bar = 0.25 pm. 5(ii). For hair immersed in sodium chloride (60 minutes) followed by immersion in aqueous silver nitrate (60 minutes), and then exposed to light, extensive deposits of silver were evident along the cuticle cmc's of all cuticle cells (Figures 8, 9). Cascade-like deposits of silver, apparently originating in the cmc were seen
