Since 1924 Miss Wall has devoted most of her professional career to cosmetics, starting with Inecto, Inc., pioneering in the scientific de- velopment of hair dyes. In 1936 New York University invited her to organize the first college accredited courses related to cosmetics. In addition, Miss Wall has taught cosmetology at many other education institutions. She has gained international recognition as the foremost authority on this branch of industrial education, being the author of five textbo.o. ks on cosmetics and cosmetology plus more than three hundred published articles. Miss Wall has been an independent consultant and author since 1947. She received both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from St. Elizabeth College and the Master of Arts degree from New York University. CHICAGO SECTION NEWS THE nRS* FALL meeting of the Chicago Section was held on Septem- ber 11th. Mr. R. L. Patterson, Head of the Industrial Research Depart- ment of The Proctor & Gamble Company, spoke on "Cream Shampoos-- Some Factors Affecting Their Consistency." Mr. Patterson has been associated with Proctor & Gamble since 1945 when he joined the research and development department. He has since concentrated on research of inedible soap and synthetic detergent products for both the household market and the industrial field. Dr. Stephen Rothman, professor of Dermatology and Head of the Section of Dermatology at the University of Chicago spoke on "Nature and Management of Oily Skin," at the October 9th meeting. Dr. Rothman is the chairman of the Committee on Cosmetics of the American Medical Association. His outstanding work on the physiology and biochemistry of the skin has earned him many honors and awards among which was the Special Award of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in 1955. All meetings are held at Henrici's Restaurant in the Merchandise Mart on the second Tuesday of the month. NEW YORK SECTION NEWS ON OCTOBER 24th, Mr. A. L. Scarbrough of the National Lead Company spoke on "Rheology Review for Cosmetic Chemists." The paper was divided into three main headings: Flow Characteristics of Representative Gels and Pigmented Dispersions, Measurement of Flow of Non-Newtonian Liquids and Theories of Flow in Non-Newtonian Liquids. Mr. Scarbrough has been associated with the New Products Development Department of the National Lead Company for eight years. He received his Master of Science degree from Lehigh University and has spent most of his investigative career in the fields of pigments, gelling agents and stabilizers. 620
